Special interest and expertise

I am originally from the US (Cleveland, Ohio), but have lived overseas since January 1983 in Canberra, Solo, Leiden, Canberra, Jogja, Jakarta, Auckland. I studied philosophy and classics at Brigham Young University (BA), comparative world history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (MA, PhD coursework under John Smail), then finished with four years at the Australian National University under Ann Kumar. For the next six years I worked on manuscript preservation projects at museums and libraries in Java. Since 1994 I have been teaching Indonesian language, literature, and culture at the University of Auckland in beautiful Aotearoa.
My research interests are mainly in the area of Javanese cultural and intellectual history studied through the lens of the written remains (manuscripts) of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I am especially interested in textual processes, prosody, composition, transmission; in mendicant student romances like the Centhini and Jatiswara; in primbon literature and calendrics; in manuscript illumination and illustration and related visual art forms; in manuscript production within the courts and in other areas (big coastal cities, pesantren, villages, cultural centers, urban pacinan); in the intellectual history of Yogyakarta, particularly in the 1840s; in the influence of Dutch thinking on Javanese writing and science over the course of the 19th century, with particular focus on such individuals as Ranggawarsita, Suryanagara, Suryawijaya (Batavia); traditional Javanese lexicography. I am not very interested in the cataloging of Javanese manuscripts, but seem to spend all my waking, and half my sleeping hours involved in it these days.
In the area of Indonesian language and literature studies I am much more limited in scope and power. I have done some translation of Indonesian short stories into English and am working slowly on a big edition of Danarto (haven't cleared this with him yet). In the realm of language I am most interested in Jakarta Youth Language, slang, Prokem, Omong Betawi, but also in the cross influences between Javanese and Indonesian

For those who might be interested, I run a very low volume discussion list for Javanists called JINARWA which can be subscribed to at majordomo@auckland.ac.nz with the message 'subscribe jinarwa' thok.

Introductory note

I graduated from the Department of Pharmacy, Institut Teknologi Bandung, in 1974. Then I worked as a junior lecturer in the department for about two years, specializing in pharmacology; later as a librarian at the ITB Central Library for about 3 years; and currently I work as an editor at the university press, Penerbit ITB. Before joining the press, in 1982 I was sent to UK for about 4 months to learn various aspects of textbook editing. The short course was conducted by The Book House Training Centre in London. Furthermore, in 1989 I attended a two-week course on professional publishing in Stanford University in Palo Alto. In addition to my full time job at Penerbit ITB, I used to teach "Introduction to Publishing" and "Indonesian Scientific Terminology" at Universitas Padjadjaran in Bandung. I have also been involved in conducting short courses in book translation and book writing, intended for state university lecturers. Further, I help IKAPI (Ikatan Penerbit Indonesia) training junior editors at various private publishers. Last but not least, at home I work as a freelance translator and editor, mostly dealing with texts from English into Indonesian.

Classification and description of Kenyah Languages of East Kalimantan and Sarawak. Any multidisciplinary project on Borneo culture.

Introductory note

I am originally Italian but I have lived in Indonesia since 1991. Most of my time I have lived in Jakarta where I came originally to improve my Bahasa Indonesia. I had studied Bahasa Indonesia in Italy where I obtained my BA in Foreign Languages and Literature at Istituto Universitario Orientale in Naples .
Once in Indonesia I decided to enroll in a Master Program of Linguistics at Universitas Indonesia. It was during this time that I got involved in a research project with WWF Indonesia undertaking a big interdisciplinary research in an area of East Kalimantan. The field work undertaken for WWF was aimed to make a description of the linguistic situation in an area inhabited mostly by Kenyah people.
The data collected for that project became then the topic of my Master thesis under the supervision of Prof. Ayatrohaedi and Dr. Multamia Lauder. The thesis presented a description of the Kenyah dialects of the studied area and their mapping. My involvement with Kenyah languages was then continued as I decided to do a Ph.D. in Linguistics at University Kebangsaan Malaysia under the supervision of Jim Collins. Kenyah languages whose data I collected in other field work trips in East Kalimantan and Sarawak, are seen now in an historical comparative perspective in order to propose their classification and define the position of this language group within the Malayo-Polynesian language family. My research interests are in the area of Dayak cultures and languages. I am interested in any aspect of the populations of Borneo and I would be happy to be involved in more multidisciplinary projects of the area. In a more broader sense I am very much interested in Malay/Indonesian language, literature and culture as well as contemporary politics of Indonesia.
Occasionally I work as translator and interpreter for Italian and Indonesian and I am trying to get involved in more projects of translation of literary work from both the languages. At the moment I am teaching Italian at the French Department of the Faculty of Letters of Universitas Indonesia hoping to reduce the gap of exchanges between the two countries.

Introductory note

Greetings to all. I have seen the list of BAHASA members (this list) and spotted quite a number of old friends from my 18 years of involvement in Indonesia. I have lived in Indonesia for 12 of those years, mostly in Solo, but now I reside in Jakarta.
I have been keenly interested in Indonesian language since I first came here in 1980, and have been involved in some personal language projects, unfunded and squeezed into my spare time, over the years. Some of these can be seen on my "recrational linguistics" web site (see URL above). Among these personal projects have been:
o Fully bilingual crosswords (TTS) and fill-in ("Misi Mengisi").
o Kamus TTS (for crossword enthusiasts, nearing completion).
o Collection of Indonesian Tongue Twisters (Pelincah Lidah).
o Just fun: Indonesian sentences written entirely with English words.
o non-academic: comparison list of Austronesian languages (on web site)
o Huge unfinished project: Roget-structured Thesaurus of Indonesian (I am seeking help to complete this)

My educational background happens to be outside of the sphere of S.E. Asian studies, linguistics, Indonesian history or culture -- it is in Fine Arts and electronic engineering. But I have used Bahasa Indonesia daily for 18 years for survival and have enjoyed every moment of it.
If anyone wants to contact me personally, feel free to use my personal e-mail address (but I may not always respond promptly due to my busy schedule).
