Educational Programs at the Institute: CEP

General Regulations

All activities on the island or in the Marine Refuge must have a sponsor (an HIMB faculty member or approved CEP Guide) who is charged with informing the group of the relevant restrictions and safety regulations, but it is the visitor’s Group Leader, as the responsible adult, who must assure that all safety regulations and precautions are rigorously enforced.

Minors must be escorted by a responsible adult whenever they move about the island. For proper supervision of minors during land-based activities there should be:

For 1st through 5th grade, at least 1 (one) adult for every 5 (five) children
For 6th to 12th grade, at least 1 (one) adult for every 10 (ten) children
The Honu Kai is required to transport groups of 20 (twenty) or more children
Personal flotation devices (PFDs) must be worn by all children under the age of 13 years
Do not enter HIMB labs uninvited — few laboratories or support facilities are open to the public, for safety and security reasons.

Remind group members not to reach inside cages or tanks without permission. In particular, monitor your group to assure that they do not harass the sharks or puffers in the ponds, do not touch animals in the small tanks, and do not disturb research in the open water tables.
