Boats

The HIMB fleet currently consists of:

Research Skiffs

A student leaves the HIMB lagoon in a 17-foot Boston whaler 17' Boston Whalers with Honda 40hp outboard engines for work within Kaneo‘he Bay and a 21' Boston Whaler with twin Evinrude 70hp outboards for work outside the Bay. Use of these vessels must be approved and coordinated through the Marine Safety Office (himbh2o@hawaii.edu).

 

Support Vessels

The Honu Kai is used for transporting heavy equipment on and off the island Passangers and cargo are transported on one of our two Landing Craft style vessels, the 40' Honu Kai or a 35' surplus landing craft. The Honu Kai is capable of handling loads up to 10,000 pounds. These vessels are available for scientific project support and are manned by designated HIMB employees.

To use the fleet boats for research, you must schedule a boat check-out; please e-mail the HIMB Marine Safety Office (himbh2o@hawaii.edu).

Groups of more than 20 will be required to use the Honu Kai ferry during their initial arrival and final departure.
Advance notice is required; please call the office at 808-236-7401.

Honu Kai Ferry charges (minimum charge = 1 hr)

Round trip to/from Lilipuna Pier

$60 / hr (flat fee)

Round trip to/from Heeia Pier

$75 / hr (flat fee)

Each hour in addition to the round trip flat rate (plankton tows, other activities):
$60 / hr weekdays
$70 / hr nights or weekends (add 1 hour prior to departure and 1 hour after arrival for boat operator to prep/clean the boat)

NOTE: As of November 20, 2005, anyone operating HIMB boats must have a Coast Guard-recognized boating certification. Please contact the HIMB Marine Safety Office (himbh2o@hawaii.edu; phone: 808-348-7342) for details or questions about equivalent certifications.
