My research interests include various aspects of the ethology and behavioral ecology reef fishes. My current research is centered on
ultraviolet vision and coloration in coral reef fishes. We are exploring the distribution of UV vision, the forms of UV-reflecting and absorbing
color patches within the visible coloration that we can sense and the evolutionary functions of both. I also welcome student research in a
wide range of intra- and inter-specific topics. Studies include both field work and laboratory experiments on development and proximate causal
factors. I favor a dual approach involving detailed field analysis along with controlled laboratory experiments: I prefer analytical along with
descriptive approaches to the study of behavior. As I approach retirement, new students are not encouraged to apply unless they can finish the
program that they have in mind within a very few years.
