Photo Galleries of Kane‘ohe Bay Species

The Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology on Coconut Island is located in Kane‘ohe Bay on the northeast shore of O‘ahu. Kane‘ohe Bay is a unique environment that houses thousands of different species of tropical marine life. The bay is composed of many different habitats, including patch reefs, mangroves, sandy and muddy bottoms, and “spurs and grooves.”

In these galleries you will find photographs of some of the species that live in Kane‘ohe Bay. All images are arranged in alphabetical order according to scientific name (common names and Native Hawaiian names are listed as well when available).

Porites sp. Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) Blue-lined surgeonfish (Acanthurus lineatus)
