In
early February 2001 a giant jellyfish, Anomalorhiza shawi, was seen in the waters
near Coconut Island. The sea jelly,
which is native to the Phillipines, had only been reported twice in Kaneohe Bay since
1983. It was transported to the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology and photographed by
scientists there. This unique animal was held in an observation tank on the island for
several hours and then released alive where it was originally found.
