Cowabunga!
Patches,
the unofficial mascot of UHINFO
UHINFO was originally developed and still maintained by the University of Hawaii Information Technology Services department. Although UHINFO had been an active gopher text-based CWIS site since early 1993, it was soon felt that the then brand new World Wide Web would also be needed to disseminate additional types of information to the general public, including graphics, video, sound, etc. The gopher server was eventually replaced completely by the Web servers at the beginning of 1998.
UHINFO is available for other organizations on campus to electronically distribute their information through this WWW server. See the "How to Get Your Information into UHINFO" if you have information that you would like to add to the system. (If you already know, or want to learn HTML coding, you may consider creating and maintaining your own Web pages for your data as well. Contact the Webmaster.)
While every effort is made to avoid errors in this information base, it is the responsibility of the each of the information providers to contribute accurate and timely information. Whenever possible, the information provider and date of the information is given to assist UHINFO users in verifying the accuracy of the information.
Any questions about the actual information contained in UHINFO should be directed to the individual information provider.
January 1996's revamp [see version 2] did some reorganizing of the pages and created 13 different sections. Also, the text and buttons which once hid the pictures used as a backdrop had been moved to the bottom so there was a better view of campus life in its entirety.
The previous renovation [see version 3] is another result of a major reorganization and a restructuring. This version is more "UH System" oriented (a UH Manoa Web Site was spun off because of this) but still includes some of the good things of the older version like UH scenery and "Today's Hot UH Web Site." Also available now are links to all the UH campuses, a pop-up menu of pages for certain categories of users, and the ability to search the entire UH system from most of the major UHINFO pages.
Version 4 from July 1998 updated the look a bit, added news headlines, and popped up the names of the campuses as you put the cursor over the blue dots. A click on the dots would take you to the specific campus' home page. A "Spotlight on UH" displayed random tidbits about the UH campuses and programs.
The current look fully reorganizes the categories, features flyout menus for the main categories, changes the color scheme, and adds a Calendar of Events. A new search engine (InfoSeek) has been added to search all hawaii.edu servers, replacing the old htdig search engine.
A trio of load-balanced Sun UltraSPARCs is the home for UHINFO, UH department pages, and the phonebook database. A companion UltraSPARC is used for the search engine.
