Alton Okinaka
Students commend Alton Okinaka, recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Advisor/Mentor for his commitment to the university where he has served in various capacities, including student association advisor and testing coordinator for general graduate school admissions tests.
The UH Hilo associate professor of sociology also volunteers at numerous athletics events.
Okinaka is involved in legislative affairs, both on campus and at the state level. This experience has proven invaluable when he is advising today’s student leaders on what to do when approaching the legislature and during senate meetings.
He is respected as an advisor and is known for his ability to easily relate to students on campus.
