Chancellor’s Award Winner

Karla Hayashi

Karla Hayashi, an instructor in English, received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Hayashi was born and raised in Hilo and returned to teach at Hawai‘i and Hilo after earning her MA from Manoa. Since she began at Hilo in 1992, Hayashi has worked to improve her teaching so students can relate classroom learning to issues in their lives.

Hayashi believes that students learn best when they are challenged, held to objective and high standards and encouraged to think beyond routine activities. "Karla is known as an outstanding teacher with strict guidelines," says Chancellor Rose Tseng.
