July 6, 2007
Aloha students and friends of the Academy for Creative Media. In this summer
update, some internships and opportunities. But first, a couple of important
reminders to get ready for Fall 07:
REGISTRATION REMINDER
July 13 is the last day to make any registration changes, such as adding
courses. After that you're locked out of the system until August 15, after
the new and transfer students get their chance. Although we have a record
registration of 301 to date, there's still room in ACM 370 - Directing; ACM
405 - Documentary Production; ACM 410 - Advanced Cinematic Production. Don't
forget - EVERY ACM major needs to take a writing course. Although ACM 350 is
booked, you can satisfy that requirement with ACM 355 - Oral Tradition to
Screenplay, which has ample seats. You can also shore up those Critical
Studies course requirements with ACM 485 - Seminar (Film Comedy) and ACM 490
- Global Media.
PRODUCTION COURSE NOTE
Production Manager Gregg Ambrosius says due to new KHET security policies,
all students will have to show their student i.d. and sign in and out at the
main lobby of the PBS Hawai'i Building when accessing ACM offices and
equipment.
SHANGHAI SUPERLATIVES
Congratulations to our five ACM student filmmakers who screened their films
at the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF). In addition to walking
the red carpet for both opening and closing ceremonies, attending screenings
and workshops, the students visited the impressive Shanghai Television
University and the new Shanghai Institute for Visual Arts, the ACM of Fudan
University. The Institute and ACM will explore an exchange relationship in
animation, similar to our exchange with Shanghai University, which hosted
our filmmakers. The ACM student delegation received widespread press
coverage in China through the Shanghai Daily newspaper and the Xinhua News
Agency. Our five ambassadors of cinema were Jay Hubert (DAO - a finalist in
the international student competition); Henry Mochida (CHOPSTICKS); Brian
Makanoa (EVE); Russell Blanchard (A BIRTHDAY WITH GRANDPA); and Roger
Nakamine (SORE SHOULDERS AND ACHING JAWS). They received Takeyama Awards
from the Roy and Hilda Takeyama Foundation Fund at ACM for their airfare.
Shanghai University provided rooms in its on-campus hotel. The SMART
Exchange Program was developed by Asst. Prof. Anne Misawa.
