ACM Update #1 FALL 2007
August 16, 2007

WELCOME BACK!

Aloha to all returning and new ACM students. Here's hoping for a great Fall Semester. It will certainly be packed with exciting events including our second annual symposium on the Korean Film Industry; a great lineup of filmmakers, animators, actors and industry reps in our Master Class series each Friday afternoon; next week's Hawaiinuiakea Native Film Showcase and October's Hawai'i International Film Festival; and our special workshop and co-production with students from Shanghai University's School of Film and Television.

This newsletter is going out to all students enrolled in Fall 2007 ACM classes, and also to those who were with us last semester and may be thinking of coming back in the Spring. Our many ACM supporters among UH faculty, the administration, legislature, media and community also receive it.

Here's an important note for ACM 255 students: The classroom has been changed to BusAd C102. It's a larger room that allows more breathing space for all. See you there Monday morning.

HAWAIINUIAKEA

The annual Native Film Showcase will be Wednesday and Thursday (8/22-23). A morning panel on Native Language in Film and Theatre begins the festival at 10 am in the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies. An afternoon panel on Finding Native Film on the World Wide Web leads up to an evening showcase of screenings at the Hawai'i Convention Center, a new screening site. For the complete program, see www.hawaiinuiakea.com.

CONGRATS TO

ACM Students Daryl Gilmore and Henry Mochida. After working as a ACM Production Intern on LOST in the Spring, and as a Production Assistant on the Big Island shoot of Steven Spielberg's next Indiana Jones film, Daryl has landed a full-time PA position on LOST. Daryl also ran camera for Henry Mochida's Audience Award winning entry into the 48hour international film contest, MAKING LOVE TO A HANDGUN. Want to see it? Go to www.sowagummybears.com/makinglovetoahandgun.mov.

Other ACM students working on the crew (and some in the cast) included Alana Hong, Jacob Holcomb, Russell Blanchard, Joshua Abel, Roger Nakamine, Brian Makanoa, Nasser Marghalani and Danielle Vivarptas-Ahrnsbrak. Good work by all!

KOFIC

ACM partners for the second year with the national Korean Film Council in co-sponsoring its Filmmakers' Development Lab August 26 - September 2. A highlight will be a symposium on the Korean Film Industry Friday, August 31, from 3 - 5 pm in Crawford 115. All ACM students are strongly urged to attend and meet some of the top film producers in Korea, and some of the best new Korean American filmmakers. The symposium will also be part of Asst. Prof. Konrad Ng's MASTER CLASS series (ACM 385).

CINEMATIQUE AT BAR 35

A congenial group of ACM students, led by Russell Blanchard, invite all (over 21, that is) to the inaugural Cinematique at Bar 35, Tuesday (8/31) from 8-10 pm at 35 N Hotel St. They'll feature screenings of films by ACM Filmmakers including Russell, Nasser Marghalani, Dave Neves, Joelle-Lynn Sarte, and Roger Nakamine. A special trailer for CHIEF, by local filmmaker Brett Wagner will also be shown. They hope to make these celebrations of independent film a monthly affair.

NOTE TO MAJORS & INTENDED MAJORS: YOU ARE NOT A MAJOR UNTIL...

Please keep in mind that you must complete your Academic Proposal and have it approved by both your ACM advisor and Interdisciplinary Studies Advisor before you can be declared an ACM major. While some students have applied to ACM and their application has been accepted, they have delayed taking the next step of preparing the Academic Proposal with their ACM advisor, and then having it approved by IS. Those students will have difficulty registering for courses that are restricted to majors, as they won't have been officially declared, or recognized, as ACM majors. So get that advising done pronto. For new applicants to the major - the same advice for you: You are not a major until your Academic Proposal has been approved by both your ACM and IS Advisors. Without it, no advanced courses will be open to you.

AND ANOTHER REMINDER ...

All ACM majors must complete a screenwriting course, either ACM 350 or 355. ACM 350 is filled for Fall, but there are still seats available in ACM 355: Oral Tradition to Screenplay. You can also shore up those Critical Studies course requirements with ACM 485 - Seminar (Film Comedy) and ACM 490 - Global Media.

PRODUCTION COURSE NOTE

Production Manager Gregg Ambrosius says due to new KHET security policies, all students will have to show their student i.d. and sign in and out at the main lobby of the PBS Hawai'i Building when accessing ACM offices and equipment.
