December 14, 2007
Aloha to students and supporters of the Academy for Creative Media. In our
final e-newsletter for the semester:
HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO GRADS
We've wrapped up another great semester at ACM. Happy Holidays to all, and a
special Congratulations to those who will be walking in Sunday's
Commencement. We applaud your accomplishments and will miss your energy.
LOOKING BACK ON FALL 2007
What a great semester of accomplishments. Student films and awards in the
Hawai'I International Film Festival (Asst. Prof. Joel Moffet's film, too);
Student scholarships and award winners; a groundbreaking Student
co-production between ACM and Shanghai University; a nationally televised
Student produced commercial for UHM; a stellar lineup of Master Classes,
including a national casting search for the next KUNG FU star; more than 50
Student films produced in digital cinema, directing, documentary and
advanced production courses; 15 animation demo reels; strengthened
international partnerships with the Korean Film Council and Shanghai
International Film Festival; and faculty professional and scholarly
activities.
ACM's accomplishments are recognized by generous donors locally, nationally
and internationally. We've received more than $150,000 in gifts this
semester:
ANONYMOUS MAINLAND FILM COUPLE DONATE ALMOST $83,000 TO ACM
This extraordinarily generous gift is from a couple from California whose
careers were in film production and who wish to remain anonymous. The gift
is the first endowment for ACM, which will create an annual fund to help
keep us abreast of new technology in our goal to build a state-of-the-art
digital media school.
ISLAND INSURANCE MAKES $50,000 GIFT TO ACM
Island Insurance Co. presented a $50,000 check to ACM to support our growth
and development. Another vote of confidence in ACM's potential to help
restructure Hawai'i's economy around ideas, intellectual property, and
digital development.
JAPANESE FIRM CREATES $20,000 ACM RESEARCH FUND
OSG Co, Ltd. of Japan has given ACM $20,000 to start a fund to support
research activities in ACM.
HAWAI'I FILM OFFICE AWARDS $49,000 CONTRACT TO ACM
The Hawai'i Film office of the State Department of Business, Economic
Development and Tourism has awarded ACM a $49,000 contract for Hawai'i-China
Film Development Programs. The contract covers ACM's October workshop and
film co-production with Shanghai University students and the continuing
SMART (Student Media Art) Exchange that will send ACM students to the
Shanghai International Film Festival in June to screen films and engage in
further workshops and co-productions with Shanghai University.
ACM SCHOLARSHIP/AWARD WINNERS
Congratulations to Andrew Synder and Suzan Ven Tapp, winners of the Grace
Abernethy Screenwriting and Women's Filmmaker Initiative Awards. Kudos as
well to Dana Miller, Robert Omura and Jacob Holcomb, who each received ACM
Student Achievement Awards.
AND MORE AWARDS ...
A standing ovation to Tommy Chock and Mark Wolf for their Shidler College of
Business award winning business development plan; and to Dane Neves for
capturing the Hawai'i International Film Festival Viewers' Choice Award for
THE MONKEYBOY FEVER.
