New Courses - New Festival
Aloha students, friends and supporters of the Academy for Creative Media at
the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In this newsletter, a special festival
and some new courses!
NETPAC/USA FILM FESTIVAL
The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) is holding a two-week
festival starting Wednesday in conjunction with the Honolulu Academy of Arts
Doris Duke Theatre, and co-sponsored by several UHM and East-West Center
programs. Here is a terrific opportunity to see some cutting edge films from
Iran to Indonesia. All screenings are at 1 pm & 7:30 pm:
Wednesday (Nov. 19) – THOSE THREE (Iran)
Thursday (Nov. 20) – OUR TIME (India)
Friday (Nov. 21) – THE LITTLE MOTH (China). The 7:30 screening will be
introduced by Prof. and NETPAC director Ming Bao Yue, who will also hold a
post-film discussion.
Saturday (Nov. 22) - THE PHOTOGRAPH (Indonesia)
Sunday (Nov. 23) - GOOD CATS (China). The 7:30 screening will have an
after-film discussion with Prof. Yue.
Tuesday (Nov. 25) - TAKVA-A MAN’S FEAR OF GOD (Turkey). ACM Prof. and NETPAC
Director Wimal Dissanayake will lead a discussion following the 7:30 pm
screening.
Wednesday (Nov. 26) – PAPER CANNOT WRAP UP THE EMBERS (Cambodia/France)
Friday (Nov. 28) – LAST QUEEN OF THE EARTH (Iran)

ANIMATORS: STORY WORKSHOP THURSDAY
Our friends at Kapiolani Community College feature a workshop with Kevin
Johnson, “Developing Stories Worth Telling and Selling Them!” Thursday (Nov.
20) 7-9pm at KCC’s KOA 102. Johnson is Creative Executive at Imagi Animation
Studio. He’s previously worked at Sony ImageWorks, Warner Bros., and Disney.
He teaches Character Animation at Cal Arts. Seating is limited, so please

THREE NEW COURSES FOR SPRING 09
ACM continues to expand with three new courses on the books for Spring 09:
* ACM 372 – Editing TR 12-1:15
* ACM 374 – Post Production Sound F 9 – 11:45
* ACM 380 – Genre and Narrative Theory in Creative Media F 2:30-5:00
KUDOS TO ACM STUDENTS
Congratulations to ACM students Cameron Nitta, Cherise Takiguchi and Monet
Sadural who received UHM Student Achievement Awards to help defray their
Spring 09 tuition. Well done!
DIRECTING WORKSHOPS – FOR CREDIT!
* Directing the Camera. Prof. Gil Bettman from Chapman University will
conduct this three-session workshop on the ABCs of directing, including
camera movement, placement and lens use. It will be offered during the
semester break: January 9, 10 and 11 from 2-6pm in Krauss 012. You can
register for 1 credit of ACM 390 through MyUH. Go to the Fall 2008
Extension, and click on Academy for Creative Media. The CRN is 1946 (ACM 390
Section 114).
ACM “OUTSIDE” ELECTIVES FOR SPRING 09
Looking to complete those 6 credits of required courses to be taken outside
of ACM? Here’s a pair of winners:
* LLEA 334 – Italian Literature as Film – M 2:30-5:00 pm.
* AMST 352 – Screening Asian Americans – Lectures MW 10:30-11:20 am. Labs
F8:30-9:30 or 9:30-10:20 or 10:30-11:20 am. Screenings Wed. 6:30-9:00 pm.
This can also be taken as ACM 352 if you need it for “inside” credit
instead.
CREW CALL FOR ACM ALUMNUS THESIS FILM
Former ACM Student Ty Sanga, who made such memorable films as PLASTIC LEI
and FOLLOW THE LEADER while here, is returning to shoot his Chapman
University Thesis Film Dec. 5-15. The story, which takes place in
pre-Western contact Hawai‘i, will be shot on super 35mm. Ty is hoping some
ACM students can join in the crew on positions such as 2nd AC, grips,

FACULTY KUDOS
* ACM Prof. Wimal Dissanayake was honored with the Lifetime Award for his
work on Asian Cinema by the Sri Lanka Foundation of Los Angeles. Prof.
Dissanayake will also deliver a paper on Ibsen and Asian Cinema at a
conference at Open University of Hong Kong.
* ACM Asst. Prof. George Wang has been selected as a faculty fellow to
attend the National Association of Television Program Executives conference
in Las Vegas in January.

Critical Studies students take note: The Library has announced a trial

POST YOUR CASTING CALL NOTICES ON ACM WEBSITE
Your film casting call can be posted on the ACM website. Send your flyer as
a jpg file to ACM Production Manager Gregg Ambrosius <ambrosiu@hawaii.edu> a
week before the call date, and it will go up for all to see.
Remember, no flyers should be posted on the glass on the front and back
entrance doors to Crawford Hall. They’ll be taken down, pronto.
