WELCOME BACK!
It’s a new semester, new year and lots of new activities and opportunities
for ACM students. We’ve already enjoyed a visit by VALKRYIE director Bryan
Singer, hosted by ACM founder Chris Lee, who served as executive producer of
the film.
A special welcome to our new students in ACM 255. We send you these
occasional e-newsletters throughout the semester to keep you connected and
informed. We also include last semester’s students, who we hope will keep us
in mind for future coursework, and perhaps majoring.
SHOW OFF ACM PRIDE WITH T-SHIRTS, HATS
The newly formed ACM Student Association will be selling spiffy ACM-logo
t-shirts and wicked cool hats next week on the 2nd-floor lobby of Crawford
Hall. Look for ACMSA head Erik Manke. He’ll be there from 10:30-1:30 on
Monday and Wednesday; 10:30 – 1:00 on Tuesday and Thursday; and Noon – 2 on
Friday. T-shirts available in all sizes S-XL. White shirts are $11, black
shirts are $12. Those way cool black hats are $13. Cash only, please.
Proceeds will help support ACM student programs.
ACM STUDY ABROAD SUMMER 2009 IN BERLIN – MEDIA STUDIES
Join ACM Professor and Chair Tom Brislin for the UH Summer 2009 Study Abroad
program in Berlin, June 6 – July 18. You earn 6 credits, including ACM 460
(Media Ethics – or ACM 384 if you’ve already taken ACM 460), plus a WI
Focus. The program is conducted at Freie Universitat. Other courses
available include international relations, literature, music composition,
and sociology. You can use the second course as a “wild card” to satisfy any
Focus or Distribution graduation requirement! The program will include
excursions around Berlin, different cities in Germany, and other parts of
Europe. There will be a particular focus this summer on media sites – film
studio, film museum, filming sites, as well as film screenings and
discussions about Berlin and Germany. For details on program structure,
costs, accommodations, etc., contact the UHM Study Abroad Center at
<www.studyabroad.org>.
ACM SMART PROGRAM IN THE NEWS
ACM’s ground-breaking SMART Exchange program, led by Asst. Prof. Anne
Misawa, with Shanghai University and the Shanghai International Film
Festival, is featured in the inaugural online issue of MALAMALAMA, the
University’s magazine. Read about the students’ success at
<www.hawaii.edu/malamalama>. There’s also a video interview with ACM student
filmmaker Lauren Cheape.

NEW LIBRARY RESOURCE
Critical Studies students take note: The Library has announced a trial
access to an extensive database, the Film & Television Literature Index,
with full text retrieval. Go to the library main page
<http://library.manoa.hawaii.edu> and click on “E-Resources and Databases”
link. Or go directly to
<http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=51836>.
Two other databases of interest are the ARTstor – lots of images, graphics,
drawings, photographs, art, and architecture. Great for designers, as is the
DAAI: Design and Applied Arts Index.

POST YOUR CASTING CALL NOTICES ON ACM WEBSITE
Your film casting call can be posted on the ACM website. Send your flyer as
a jpg file to ACM Production Manager Gregg Ambrosius <ambrosiu@hawaii.edu> a
week before the call date, and it will go up for all to see.
Remember, no flyers should be posted on the glass on the front and back
entrance doors to Crawford Hall. They’ll be taken down, pronto.
REMINDER TO NEW MAJORS & INTENDED MAJORS: YOU ARE NOT A MAJOR UNTIL…
Please keep in mind that you must complete your Academic Proposal and have
it approved by both your ACM advisor and Interdisciplinary Studies Advisor
before you can be declared an ACM major. While some students have applied to
ACM and their application has been accepted, they have delayed taking the
next step of preparing the Academic Proposal with their ACM advisor, and
then having it approved by IS. Those students will have difficulty
registering for courses that are restricted to majors, as they won’t have
been officially declared, or recognized, as ACM majors. So get that advising
done pronto. For new applicants to the major – the same advice for you: You
are not a major until your Academic Proposal has been approved by both your
ACM and IS Advisors. Without it, no advanced courses will be open to you.
