ACM Spring 2009 #7
May 1, 2009

ALOHA GRADS

Congratulations to our Spring 09 Graduating Seniors. Please be sure to let
your ACM advisor know you’re heading out for bigger and better things, and
how we can stay in touch with you as you wow the world with your talent! ACM
alums are a strong, growing group – and an important network for job
referrals.

REGISTRATION TIME FOR THE REST OF US

In addition to a menu of ACM offerings that give depth and heft to our
Digital Cinema, Animation & Game Design and Critical Studies tracks, some
excellent courses from other departments include:
* AMST 250 – American Film History.
* MUS 360 – Music in Film. (Email Prof. Kate McQuiston at
mcquisto@hawaii.edu, identifying yourself as an ACM student and include your
student number for permission to enroll.)

SPECIAL NOTE FOR ACM 310 FALL 09

The certification workshop for camera and editing will be incorporated into
the regular meeting times for ACM 310 for Fall 09. There will be no need to
sign up for a separate workshop.

ANIMATION STUDENTS TO MIX WITH HOLLYWOOD GREAT

Max Howard, former president of Warner Bros. Feature Animation and Senior
Vice President of Disney Feature Animation will meet with ACM animation
students next week to talk about their creative projects and about careers
in the industry. Howard will also be judging animation shorts by Hawai‘i
kids who have studied in an after-school program taught in part by ACM
animation majors and designed by ACM Asst. Prof. Linda Dorn.

MONDAY IS THE DEADLINE TO WIN $1,500 TO PRODUCE YOUR FILM

Monday (May 4) is the deadline to submit your screenplay and possibly win
one of two $1,500 awards in our annual Grace Abernethy Screenwriting
Competition. The award is designed to help cover production costs to put
that screenplay on the screen. For more information, contact Asst. Prof.
Joel Moffett at 956-3353 or <moffett@hawaii.edu>. The competition is made
possible by the Grace Abernethy Fund for Creative Writing through the
Hawai‘i Community Foundation

LOST INTERNSHIPS FOR FALL 09

ACM has arranged with the producers of LOST for a new internship during the
Fall ’09 semester on the hit ABC series. Academic credit is available
(ACM495) for those able to commit to 150 working hours over the course of
the semester (approximately 10 hours a week, preferably one full day a
week). The ten selected interns will experience work in five departments on
a rotating basis: Production Office, Art Department, Locations, Wardrobe and
the Assistant Directors Department.
Interested? Contact Assistant Professor Joel Moffett at <moffett@hawaii.edu >,
who will coordinate the project. Majors and intended majors are, as always, given
priority (another in the very long list of good reasons to major or double major in ACM!)

HIFF INTERNSHIPS, TOO

The Hawai‘i International Film Festival’s Internship Program is eligible for
credit (ACM 495). Email a resume to Michael Doyle <intern@hiff.org>

<ambrosiu@hawaii.edu>.

TV). DVD #8450

TV SHOW NEEDS PA ON MAUI

A reality TV show is seeking a production assistant, June 6-21st on Maui.
They’ll pay. Contact <look@ashleyfoto.com>.

POST YOUR CASTING CALL NOTICES ON ACM WEBSITE

Your film casting call can be posted on the ACM website. Send your flyer as
a jpg file to ACM Production Manager Gregg Ambrosius <ambrosiu@hawaii.edu> a
week before the call date, and it will go up for all to see.

Remember, no flyers should be posted on the glass on the front and back
entrance doors to Crawford Hall. They’ll be taken down, pronto.

REMINDER TO NEW MAJORS & INTENDED MAJORS: YOU ARE NOT A MAJOR UNTIL…

Please keep in mind that you must complete your Academic Proposal and have
it approved by both your ACM advisor and Interdisciplinary Studies Advisor
before you can be declared an ACM major. While some students have applied to
ACM and their application has been accepted, they have delayed taking the
next step of preparing the Academic Proposal with their ACM advisor, and
then having it approved by IS. Those students will have difficulty
registering for courses that are restricted to majors, as they won’t have
been officially declared, or recognized, as ACM majors. So get that advising
done pronto. For new applicants to the major – the same advice for you: You
are not a major until your Academic Proposal has been approved by both your
ACM and IS Advisors. Without it, no advanced courses will be open to you.
