Academic Year 2006-2007


Mission

The Academy for Creative Media emphasizes narrative, or story telling, theories, skills and application across multiple platforms of digital media and within a context of cultural and aesthetic values. More than just a "film school," ACM seeks to empower students to tell their own stories of Hawaii, the Pacific and Asia rather than have those stories told for them through a different cultural lens that is distant and often distorted.

Accomplishments

Faculty Additions and Development

  • ACM added two faculty members - Asst. Prof. Linda Dorn joined in August 2006, and Asst. Prof. Konrad Ng in January 2007, bringing the faculty count to eight. Gregg Ambrosius also joined the staff as Production Manager (APT).

  • ACM held a Faculty Retreat at the beginning of the academic year and introduced a Faculty Handbook; Criteria for Tenure and Promotion; and DPC Procedures Governing Tenure Promotion, and Contract Renewal. Regular faculty meetings were held biweekly throughout the year. Two additional faculty develop sessions were held - on teaching and on tenure & promotion.

  • ACM Chair Tom Brislin was awarded a Faculty Fellowship by the National Association of Television Program Executives. He also published an article in the Journal of Mass Media Ethics. ACM adjunct Prof. Wimal Dissanayake received the Sri Lankan National Literary Award for his book "Enabling Traditions."

    Curriculum Additions and Development

  • Seven new courses were approved and added to the ACM catalog. Four were introduced during AY 2006-2007: Documentary Production, Cinematography, Visual Effects and Directing. Three will be offered for the first time Fall 2007: 3D Character Animation I, Drawing for Animation, and Techniques in Creative Media.

  • ACM inaugurated its Animation RenderFarm at Leeward Community College. The RenderFarm is made possible by more than $300,000 in private donations and will serve digital media programs across the UH system and is available to state public and private schools.

  • ACM developed a continuing student internship program with the ABC-TV series "Lost."

  • ACM students began their own co-curricular activity, a biweekly Student Movie Night in partnership with the UH Law School student entertainment law interest group. ACM student films, as well as feature films are screened and discussed.

  • ACM conducted a successful series of Master Classes with industry and academic luminaries including Directors Bryan Singer, Cameron Crowe, Justin Lin, Pietro Reggiani and John Greyson; Producers and Writers Jon Peters, Leo Chu, Eric Garcia, Dean Pitchford, and Oscar Kightley; Video Game artist Eddo Stern and critic James Paul Gee; actor Kal Penn; and animation pioneer Roy Disney.

    Progress toward BA Degree Approval

    The ACM Proposal for a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Media was approved by the Colleges of Arts and Sciences Program and Curriculum Committee and sent for review to the Faculty Senate Committee on Academic Programs and Policies.

    UHM Partnerships and Collaborations


  • ACM has entered into a partnership for a proposed Certificate in Politics and Cinema with the Department of Political Science. It will include one new cross-listed course.

  • ACM and the Department of Art are collaborating in the development of ACM's animation program, including the use of Art Building space for the new drawing class, and the encouragement of double majors in Art and ACM for animation.

  • ACM and the Department of American Studies are cooperating in the development of Critical Studies curriculum, with a possible future certificate program. ACM has been asked to consult on American Studies new faculty position in cinema studies.

  • ACM continues to collaborate closely with the Center for Hawaiian Studies in co- sponsoring the annual Hawaiinuiakea Indigenous Film Festival, directed by ACM Asst. Prof. Merata Mita.

  • ACM and the MaŻnoa Chancellor's Office are collaborating on a 30-second PSA and short film.

    International Partnerships

  • ACM entered the second year of its SMART (Student Media Art) Exchange with Shanghai University, the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Hawai'i International Film Festival. ACM hosted six SU students at the October HIFF for a program of Chinese student films. SU hosted five ACM students at the June SIFF where their films were screened for an international audience.

  • ACM established a relationship with the national Korean Film Council in co-sponsoring its Filmmaker Development Workshop in the Fall, which included an on-campus Symposium on the Korean Film Industry. Korean Film Industry Symposium. The Film Council will return for its second workshop Fall 2007, also co-sponsored by ACM.

    Student Festivals and Awards


  • 10 ACM student films enjoyed 29 screenings in 11 international festivals in Hawai'i, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Riverside, Portland, Houston, Appalachia, Shanghai, and Phnom Penh.

  • ACM presented 16 student awards and scholarships totaling more than $20,000, including the Women's Filmmaker Initiative, Grace Abernethy Screenwriting Awards, Takeyama Awards, HAB Scholarships, and UHM Student Achievement Awards.

    Legislature

  • Approval of additional faculty position.
  • Approval of Grant-in-Aid partnered with Hawai'i International Film Festival to support educational outreach program and SMART Exchange.
  • Support for establishing and equipping a permanent facility.
  • Well-received UH Day at the Capitol.
