SMART Exchange program, 2006 to current: Is a unique, ground-breaking program of U.S.-- China student films, filmmakers, film festivals (Hawaii International Film Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival), and film collaborations, shot on location in Hawai’i and China.
" What is so wonderful, to me, about the SMART Exchange is that it takes filmmaking outside of the film school context. The exchange opens a window for the ACM student, allowing her a glimpse of filmmaking on the international level. With the collaboration itself, it means working with young Chinese filmmakers and understanding their way of thinking and working. The collaboration is complemented by SIFF, which places the ACM student amongst filmmakers of all ages from all around the world. Not only do we have the opportunity to see their films, which represent a variety of cultural and world views, but we also have the opportunity to socialize and form relationships with our international peers. Attending SIFF also gives a glimpse into the pulse of the Chinese film industry, which directors, films, and stars are hot, and in what direction the industry is heading. All that can be understood just by being there."
" The SMART Exchange was challenging, intensive, exciting and at times, inspiring; there was never a moment where I wasn’t experiencing something new. Being a part of this three-week exchange has allowed me to dream bigger, set my goals higher, and push my standards to a new level. In the future, if I do find any measure of success, the SMART exchange will have undoubtedly played a significant role in that."
