Interim Chancellor, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa

Robert Bley-Vroman

Robert Bley-Vroman was appointed interim chancellor of UH Manoa on September 1, 2014. As the chief executive officer of the campus, he is responsible for administration and management, including providing leadership for academic units and facilitating success of the academic enterprise.

Before his appointment as chancellor, Bley-Vroman served as dean of the College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature, one of the larger units at the university and one of four colleges of arts and sciences. He earned doctorate and master of arts degrees in linguistics and a MA in Germanics from the University of Washington. His undergraduate degree in German is from Pomona College in Claremont, California.

A faculty member at UH Manoa since 1987, Bley-Vroman is a former chair of the UH Manoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee. He was also chair of the Department of Second Language Studies, director of the Second Language Teaching and Curriculum Center and founder and first director of the National Foreign Language Resource Center.

Before coming to UH Manoa, he taught in Romania at Universitatea din Cluj (English and applied linguistics), the University of Texas at Austin (linguistics) and at the University of Michigan, where he was director of courses for the English Language Institute. He also served as project manager at the interstate consortium SEARCH Group (Sacramento) for the national project on criminal justice terminology (Federal Law Enforcement Assistance Administration).

He is a contradance caller for the Contradancers of Hawai‘i, pianist with the band Whiskey Starship, hiker, collector of old telephones and ringer of bells in the St. Andrew’s Cathedral tower.
