    The University of Hawaii at Manoa is an ethnically diverse campus, as is the state of Hawaii. Students come from all 50 states and 81 countries. The different ethnic backgrounds represented are: African American - 1.0%, Asian - 41%, Caucasian - 26%, Hispanic - 2.1%, Mixed - 15%, Native Hawaiian - 7.9%, Pacific Islander - 3%, and Other - 4%.

Located just minutes away from Waikiki beach and Ala Moana Center, a major shopping mall, and only fifteen minutes away from the downtown Honolulu area, students are close to recreational, commercial, and cultural activities.

    The university has a crime prevention program based on the dual concept of eliminating or minimizing opportunities for crime while encouraging students to assume responsibility for their own safety by taking common sense precautions.
    An escort service is provided between dusk and dawn for students who would otherwise have to walk alone on campus at night. Sixty-eight emergency call boxes are placed throughout campus, with a direct connection to the campus security dispatchers.
