Attending an ALA annual conference can be a tremendous career boost to a new librarian. Opportunities abound for continuing education, information exchange, and networking. 3M Library Systems continues its generous support of the 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant program this year, by providing funding to cover the cost of registration fees, airfare, lodging and some incidental expenses for 3 individuals to attend the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, IL June 2005.  Applicants must be personal members of both ALA and NMRT in order to be eligible.

The application deadline is December 15, 2004. The selection of grant recipients will take place at the ALA Midwinter meeting in January 2005. To apply for the grant and for more information, go to the NMRT website at (http://www.ala.org/ala/nmrt/applyforfunds/3mawardinformation.htm), or contact:

:: HLA Silent Auction to Benefit UH LIS Students

The Hawaii Library Association Executive Board has selected the University of Hawaii ALA Student Chapter and the UH LIS Alumni Group as partners in the Silent Auction fundraiser, which will take place at the HLA Annual Conference on October 23-24, 2004 at the Turtle Bay Resort. The silent auction is one of the organization's main fundraisers. This year's co-sponsors support scholarships and programs for students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

We need your help in order for this event to be a success. In addition to volunteers, we need gift items for the auction. If you have an idea for a possible donor, or have gifts (gift certificates, artwork, library paraphernalia, books, foods, etc.) please contact this year's coordinator, Andrew Wertheimer or call (808) 956-5839. Thank you!
