:: History Brownbag

ALA-SC invites you to join Dr. Wertheimer's LIS 612 (History of Books & Libraries) class on Tuesday, November 29 (in Bilger 319) @ 9:00am to hear UH Professor Dr. Chieko Tachihata, Hawaiian Curator Emeritus discuss her pioneering University of Southern California Ph.D. dissertation on the History of Public Libraries in Hawaii. Come learn the history of the only statewide public library system in the United States!

:: Digital Libraries

Let's get digital! Join us on Wednesday, November 16 @ 4pm in Bilger 319 when Stephanie Nelson (Electronic Resources Coordinator for Kapi'olani Community College), Sunny Pai (librarian with Hamilton library's IT department), and Ralpha Toyama (Systems Librarian for Leeward Community College) discuss researching, implementing, and managing electronic resources in a library environment.

ALA-SC will be hosting a student & alumni mixer at the Paniolo Lounge & Polo Bar (at Fairmont Orchid) on Friday, November 11 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. First round of pupus are compliments of ALA-SC!

:: History brownbag

ALA-SC and the LIS program are pleased to present a special brownbag lecture by Australian scholar Dr. Matthew Fishburn on Wednesday, November 9 @ 4:00pm in Bilger 319. Dr. Fishburn will be in Hawaii to share part of his dissertation on libraries, reading, and bookburning during the second world war.

:: HITS Social

ALA-SC will be hosting a welcome party for our neighbor island LIS HITS intensive weekend students this Saturday, November 5th at Volcano Joe's from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. First round of pupus are free!

:: Halloween Event

Join us for some Halloween fun on Monday, October 31 @ 6:30pm with noted local children's author & illustrator, James Rumford. Bilger 319 (during LIS 681, which everyone is welcome to attend).

:: The Jet-Setting Librarian

ALA-SC & SLA/ASIST-SC proudly present a brownbag on "untraditional" librarianship with Jan Davis, Account Services Manager for EBSCO Information Services on Monday, October 17 @ 3:50pm in Bilger 319. Come hear Jan speak about how she's used her MLIS to be a globe-trotting librarian!

:: Treasures of the Library Tour

Dr. Karen Peacock, Head of Special Collections at Hamilton LIbrary, has graciously agreed to give ALA-SC a special 45-minute guided tour of selected rare books in the Making Connections/Treasures of The Library exhibit, currently featured at the Gallery in the Art Building. The tour will start promptly at 4pm on Thursday, October 13th. Pleease RSVP to alasc@hawaii.edu to save a spot for this event!

:: Don't Worry—Be Happy!

Join us for happy hour at Morton's Steakhouse in Ala Moana Shopping Center on Friday, October 14 @ 5pm. After happy hour, we'll head over to the McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Park for the Talk Story Festival at 7pm.

:: LA County Recruitment brownbag

ALA-SC is sponsoring a presentation on Thursday, October 6th @ 3:50pm (in Bilger 319) by Ms. Josie Reyes of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, which is currently recruiting additional librarians. Ms. Reyes will also have time to conduct a small number of interviews on Monday, October 10. Please send email to Lillian Nicolich to arrange an interview!

The Fall 2005 Ice Cream Social & New Student Mixer is Friday, September 2 at the Queen Lili'uokalani Center for Student Services from 2:30 pm - 4pm in room 412.
