On behalf of Governor Linda Lingle and the Hawai‘i Commission for National and Community Service, in celebration of volunteers across Hawai‘i, we would like to thank everyone who participated in the nominations for the 2008 Governor’s Volunteer Recognition Award.

CLICK HERE to view the finalists in each category.  The winners will be announced at the Governor’s Volunteer Recognition Awards Dinner on March 21, 2009 at the Ala Moana Hotel’s Hibiscus Ballroom.

Every day extraordinary individuals, organizations, and businesses effect real change in their communities through their volunteer service.  They are the catalysts that help people and groups move past their differences to build shared understanding and solve common problems.  Volunteers give Hawai‘i hope for the future.  The Governor’s Volunteer Recognition Award recognizes individuals and organizations for their dedication, commitment, and determination in promoting and supporting volunteerism throughout Hawai‘i.  It is the highest honor bestowed by the Hawai‘i Commission for National and Community Service with the purpose of inspiring individuals to make a positive impact on the lives of people who need it and places where it can make a difference.

As the Governor’s advisory board on matters relating to community service and volunteerism, the Hawaii Commission for National and Community Service recognizes the state's unique Hawaiian heritage and instilled with the values of many cultures and peoples, the Commission is guided by the principles of manuwahi (to give freely), kōkua (to support, assist), laulima (to work cooperatively), and lokahi (unity, harmony).
