Historic Preservations Admission Requirements and Procedures

Applicants for admission to the Historic Preservation Program should possess an academic or employment background in preservation-related disciplines or a demonstrate a strong interest and motivation to pursue such studies. There are no specific prerequisites, other than possession of an undergraduate degree.

All prospective Historic Preservation Graduate Certificate students must apply for classified admission to the UH Graduate Division, unless already enrolled or accepted as a classified graduate student. Prospective students should mail directly to the department the Graduate Program Supplemental information form and Statement of Objectives form. Unfortunately, there is no financial aid for certificate-only students.

The Graduate admissions application deadline is March 1st for the Fall term, and September 1st for the Spring term.

As part of the Application for Graduate Admission, an official transcript from each institution attended must also submitted directly by the institution to the Graduate Admissions office. If the applicant received a graduate degree from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa within the last five years, the Graduate Admissions office still has the transcripts on file. If it is more than five years, a Request for Transcript form (available from this office or UH Graduate Division) must be submitted.

The Department of American Studies waives the requirements of GRE scores and two letters of recommendation for Historic Preservation Graduate Certificate applicants.

If, in addition to the Historic Preservation Graduate Certificate, a student also wishes to apply for concurrent admission to the M.A. or Ph.D. program in American Studies or any other department, a second Application for Graduate Admission must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions office.
