Beginning 15 January 2009, the service provided by the Laboratory Animal Service (LAS) of
entering past protocol information into the TOPAZ/Granite electronic protocol management
system will cease. Any outstanding protocol information to be entered into TOPAZ will be
the responsibility of the Principle Investigator.
Effective 01 November 2008, please contact Ms. Denise Yee for instructions and questions
regarding logging onto the TOPAZ system. Ms. Yee is also the contact person for instructions
and questions regarding the use of the vertebrate animal use protocol forms. Ms. Yee can

Additional Topaz Training Sessions:
Additional
Topaz protocol training sessions for new researchers, staff members,
and individuals that were not able to attend training that was held in
July and October 2007 have been scheduled. Seating is limited to six
individuals per session and reservations are required. The classes will
be held in the computer labs at - Kaka'ako JABSOM MEB 107D and UH Manoa
Campus Agricultural Sciences Building 215.

Wednesday, February 13, 2008 is being targeted as the date where all
protocols submissions will be required to be submitted using the
web-based Topaz system. Protocol applications submitted on paper will
not be accepted.

Released
19 December 2007: In order to optimally use
the TOPAZ web-based application, the computer with which you submit
your protocol applications should meet these minimum recommended
hardward and software requirements listed by the vendor. The minimum
requirements are as follows:
Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional
SP4 / XP SP2 / Vista / MAC OS-X 10.4 or higher
Computer and Processor: Minimum Pentium 3;
933 Mhz (PC), PPC G4/G5 (Mac), or Intel (Mac)
Memory:512 MB RAM or higher (recommended 1
GB or more)
Hard Drive:15 GB available disk space
Software: Internet Explorer 6/7, Firefox
2.x, Safari 2.x
Adobe Flash Player (9.0.47 or higher)
Adobe reader 5.x or higher

30 October 2007 – The web-based program for submitting protocols to the
IACUC on-line has been launched. Go to this web address: http://Las01.its.hawaii.edu/TOPAZEnterprise

logging onto the system. Mr. Matassa can be reached at (808)

As a
reminder, the IACUC will be permitting the use of paper forms to only
28 November 2007. Effective 29 November 2007, all new protocol
submissions, including full and annual renewals,and amendments
(revisions) are required to be submitted to the IACUC using the
web-based system.
- Released
03 October 2007 - This announcement supersedes the earlier
projected date of the launching of the web-based program for submitting
protocols to the IACUC on-line. Due to unforeseen technical
circumstances, the launching of the web-based program has been delayed
at least to 15 October 2007. Please check this website for
updates.
- Topaz/Granite
Training in October 2007. This training is mandatory
for principal investigators (PIs) and their staff who were not able to
attend the sessions that were held in July. Read about it in the downloadable (PDF) information packet.
- The IACUC
has streamlined the review process for adding new personnel to approved
protocols. Read about it in Policy 16.0 -
Personnel Additions to Animal Use Activities. Effective
July 2, 2007.
- The
IACUC has instituted a new requirement for project personnel to be
re-certified on regulations training. Re-certification will be required
every three years and will coincide with the full renewal of protocols.
