Anti-virus Software Download (cont'd)

Step 2. What anti-virus software package do you need?

Since you have a Macintosh desktop or laptop with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.6 or later) or Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), you will want to download VirusScan 8.6 for the Macintosh. The system requirements are as follows:

Step 3. Download the VirusScan anti-virus software. (just do this once)

At this point, you will need to

  1. Go to the main Download Page.
  2. Click on Click here to login to the software download site.
  3. Type your UH Username and Password in the appropriate boxes, then click on Login.
  4. Fill in the number of computers you will be installing VirusScan on in the "Current # of Licenses" box. Click on Download.
  5. You may have to click on Download or OK for the download to proceed.
  6. VirusScan will now be downloaded to your desktop. When the download has finished, there should be a disk icon named VirusScan 8.6 mounted on your desktop. On this disk will be an icon named VirusScan.pkg.
  7. Come back to this page to continue the process at Step 4. You may also wish to print this page for reference.

Go to the main Download Page Now.

Step 4. Install the VirusScan anti-virus software. (just do this once)

  1. If you have an older version of VirusScan installed on your Macintosh, you need to uninstall it before installing VirusScan 8.6. Double click on the VirusScan 8.6 disk icon on your desktop. (If you do not see a VirusScan 8.6 disk icon, double click on the VirusScan 8.6.dmg icon on your desktop.) Double click on the VirusScan Uninstall.command icon. When prompted, type the password you use to login to your Macintosh. When you see [Process completed], close the window by clicking on the red dot in the upper left corner.
  2. Double click on the VirusScan.pkg icon.
  3. If you are asked "This package contains a program that determines if the software can be installed. Do you want to continue?", click on Continue.
  4. At the next screen, click Continue.
  5. You will be at the Read Me screen. Click Continue.
  6. You will be at the Software License Agreement screen. If you agree with the terms, click Continue. In the following window, click Agree.
  7. Next, choose the disk you want to install VirusScan on by clicking on the drive's icon. A green arrow signifies that a drive has been selected. Click Continue.
  8. In the next window, click the Install (it may also say Upgrade) button to install VirusScan. You may be prompted for an administrator password. If you are, type the same password you use to login to your Macintosh, and click OK.
  9. You should see a message that the software was installed successfully. Click on Close.
  10. Restart your Macintosh (go to the "Apple" menu and select Restart).

After your Macintosh has restarted, a VirusScan icon should be in your Applications folder.

Step 5. Download and install the latest Definition File.

After your computer has restarted, check that VirusScan is up to date:

  1. Launch VirusScan (Hard drive->Applications->VirusScan)
  2. Click on the eUpdate button near the bottom of the window
  3. Click on Start

VirusScan 8.6 does not seem to reliably eUpdate itself. It is recommended that you create an eUpdate task to run daily.

  1. Launch VirusScan (Hard drive->Applications->VirusScan)
  2. At the top, click on the Scheduler icon.
  3. Click on New eUpdate Task
  4. Type a name for your task (e.g. daily eUpdate in the "Task Name" box.
  5. Next to "Date and Time", click on Set... Select the start date and time for the first time the task will occur.
  6. Under the "Recurrence" option, select Daily.
  7. Select No end date
  8. Click OK to close the window. Click on the red dot the upper left to close the VirusScan scheduler window.

Congratulations!

Your computer should now be protected against viruses.
