Anti-virus Software Download (cont'd)

Step 2. What anti-virus software package do you need?

 Since you have a Macintosh desktop or laptop with MacOS 10.4, you will want to download McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5. The system requirements are as follows:

Step 3. Download the McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 anti-virus software. (just do this once)

At this point, you will need to

  1. Download the Virex 7.7 uninstaller.
  2. Go to the main Download Page.
  3. Click on Click here to login to the software download site.
  4. Type your UH Username and Password in the appropriate boxes, then click on Login.
  5. Fill in the number of computers you will be installing Mcafee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 on in the "Current # of Licenses" box. Click on Download.
  6. You may have to click on Download or OK for the download to proceed.
  7. McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 will now be downloaded to your desktop. When the download has finished, there should be a disk icon named VirusScan 8.5 mounted on your desktop. On this disk will be an icon named VirusScan.pkg.
  8. Come back to this page to continue the process at Step 4. You may also wish to print this page for reference.

Step 4. Install the McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 anti-virus software. (just do this once)
  1. To remove Virex 7.7, double click on the Virex Uninstall.command icon.
  2. Double click on the VirusScan.pkg icon. If necessary, double click on the VirusScan 8.5 disk icon on your desktop first. (If you do not see a VirusScan 8.5 disk icon, double click on the VirusScan 8.5.dmg icon on your desktop.)
  3. If you are asked "This package contains a program that determines if the software can be installed. Do you want to continue?", click on Continue.
  4. At the next screen, click Continue.
  5. You will be at the Read Me screen. Click Continue.
  6. You will be at the Software License Agreement screen. If you agree with the terms, click Continue. In the following window, click Agree.
  7. Next, choose the disk you want to install McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 on by clicking on the drive's icon. A green arrow signifies that a drive has been selected. Click Continue.
  8. In the next window, click the Install (it may also say Upgrade) button to install McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5. You may be prompted for an administrator password. If you are, type the same password you use to login to your Macintosh, and click OK.
  9. McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 will now be installed. At the end of the install, you will be asked if you want to scan files on both Read and Write (files will be scanned when they are read from, or written to, the hard drive), or just on Write (files will only be scanned when they are written to the hard drive). Select Write Only, then click Continue.
  10. Click Restart.
After your Macintosh has restarted, a VirusScan icon should now be in your Applications folder.

Step 5. Download and install the latest Definition File.

After your computer has restarted, check that McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 is up to date:

  1. Launch McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 (Hard drive->Applications->VirusScan)
  2. Click on the eUpdate button near the bottom of the window
  3. Click on Start

In the future, McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 will automatically check for updates whenever your Macintosh has an Internet connection. New McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 definitions are released approximately once a week; sometimes more often, sometimes less often. You may manually update McAfee VirusScan for Mac 8.5 at any time.
