MA Degree Evaluations

Progress toward the degree is evaluated by the following measures.

Comprehensive Exam for Admission to Candidacy

Students must pass a comprehensive exam in the second or third semester of residency to be admitted to candidacy. Its purpose is to demonstrate a broad knowledge of Asian and/or Pacific art history. Those failing must pass successfully on a second attempt or they will be dismissed from the program.

Foreign Language Exam

Students must also demonstrate a reading knowledge in a foreign language appropriate to the field of their specialization, chosen in consultation with the area advisor. Proof of proficiency is successful completion of 2 years of language training at the college level or the successful pass of a reading exam given by the Art Department or the Language Dept. equivalent to 2 nd year college level training.

Final Oral Exam

Thesis/and Non thesis plans require a final oral exam on a major paper or a thesis by a graduate committee selected in consultation with the advisor.
