¶The MA in art history emphasizes the arts of Asia and the Pacific. The curriculum is designed to allow the student to understand the significant forms and issues in Asian and/or Pacific arts within their culture and historical contexts; to understand and apply a variety of art history methodologies, to successfully research and add to our knowledge about Asian/pacific arts and to be able to teach at the community college or high school level, to enter a Ph.D. program and/or arts-related fields. The Department offers a graduate assistantship, scholarships and other financial aid and provides opportunities for internships at museums and cultural institutions within Honolulu.
¶The MA in Art History offers both a Plan A (thesis) and Plan B (non-thesis) focus. The most suitable plan for a student will be determined by the faculty and student after the student is admitted to candidacy.
¶Plan A is recommended for students intending to continue to the Ph.D. level work or other employment that requires considerable research and writing skills. Students in Plan A are encouraged to complete course work beyond the minimum Plan A requirements. Plan A requires that students complete:
