RESEARCH AREAS – Fibers, Foundations, The “Philosophers Pedagogy”
Maya Portner’s artwork results in objects and images. With a process rooted firmly in drawing, she is primarily concerned with materials and their physical and conceptual potentials. Her current practice involves papermaking, paper cutting, drawing, and printmaking such as linoleum block- and screen-printing.
Maya Portner grew up in Honolulu. Portner spent time at the Museum of Natural History ‘La Specola’ in Florence, Italy, where she later held a solo exhibition. Her work was included in the Holland Paper Biennial of 2008 in Den Haag, The Netherlands. In 2011 Portner traveled to Gujurat, India, as Artist-in-Residence at CHHAAP Baroda Printmaking Studio. She also actively exhibits her work in Honolulu, and serves as Secretary of Hawai‘i Craftsmen.
