GRANT KAGIMOTO
Designer and President, Cane Haul Road, 1977–present

For over 30 years Grant Kagimoto has been the creative force behind Cane Haul Road, recognized for its signature graphic designs—witty verbal and visual puns on local food, plants, animals, and phrases—that have become beloved classics. His iconic images printed on T-shirts, calendars, and tea towels celebrate Hawai‘i lifestyle and traditions formed by the plantation era milieu, comprised of diverse ethnic groups. Kagimoto was part of the movement in the 1970s that believed in the uniqueness of pidgin English and that Hawaii’s local culture had its place in the world. He credits his education in visual design as laying the foundation for his career. Kagimoto’s designs “tell a story that will hopefully have a timeless appeal and will help save a bit of what makes Hawai‘i unique.”
