Joseph Stanton's interdisciplinary Ph.D. work for New York University involved the study of relationships between painting and poetry in nineteenth- and twentieth-century America. He teaches courses in American and European art, literature, and culture. He has published essays in such journals as Art Criticism, American Art, Journal of American Culture, Soundings, and Harvard Library Bulletin. His poetry has appeared in Poetry, Poetry East, Harvard Review, and numerous other journals and anthologies. His books include Imaginary Museum, Cardinal Points, What the Kite Thinks, The Important Books, and A Hawai'i Anthology. Among his works in progress are a book on American picture-book art and another that collects and extends his research on Winslow Homer.
