About the Gallery


The University of Hawaii Art Gallery presents a varied exhibition program which plays a significant role in providing information about the visual arts in both an historical and contemporary context. One of the finest temporary exhibition facilities in the nation, the gallery consists of approximately 4,200 square feet of versatile space with an installation system of modular and movable walls that allows the utmost in flexibility of presentation.

 
The Art of Asian Costume

The Art Gallery has organized 14 traveling exhibitions which have been presented at more than 100 museums in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, and Guam. The most popular are the triennial International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibitions that feature small-scale works by artists from around the world.


Greek and Russian Icons

The smaller Commons Gallery serves an important role as a weekly showcase for thesis exhibitions, the work of visiting artists, and on-going class work. Approximately 50,000 people annually view exhibitions in both galleries.


East-West Ceramics Collaboration

Public programs of lectures, symposia, films, and docent tours have increased the community outreach of the exhibitions. Organized tours for students from public and private schools constitute another aspect of the gallery's programming.


International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition

The University of Hawaii Art Gallery has developed a national and international reputation for the quality of its exhibitions and publications both in content and design. Five exhibitions received the distinguished Print Casebooks Best in Exhibition Design Awards, and many of its publications have been recognized in annual competitions of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Honolulu Chapter, and the American Advertising Federation, Hawaii District.

Gallery hours are:
Monday - Friday, 10:30 - 4;
Sunday, 12 - 4.
Closed Saturdays and holidays.
Admission to both galleries is free.
