HONOLULU, OAHUReported by The Korean Central Daily as being the largest exhibition of contemporary Korean artists ever to show outside of Korea, Crossings 2003: Korea/Hawaii has confirmed its final exhibition schedule with a roster that includes 55 artists.
A collaboration between Honolulus major art museums, including the Honolulu Academy of Arts, The Contemporary Museum, and the award-winning University of Hawaii Art Gallery, Crossings 2003: Korea/Hawaii is an international arts event that commemorates the 100th anniversary of Korean immigration to the United States. More than 50 Korean artistsmany of them recognized as international leaders in the field of contemporary artwill be featured at ten galleries and museums in Honolulu and on Maui beginning in September 2003. Crossings 2003: Korea/Hawaii . . . features the work of more than 50 contemporary Korean artists at numerous sites in Honolulu and on Maui in the fall of 2003. Many of the artists are recognized as international leaders in the field of contemporary art.
Crossings 2003 is organized by Honolulus major art museums: The Contemporary Museum, The Honolulu Academy of Arts, the University of Hawaii Art Gallery and the East-West Center Gallery, but also involves many of Hawaiis other museums and exhibit venues. In total, nine institutions will participate in the project. (more - pdf)
University of Hawaii Art Gallery
September 14-November 7, 2003. features 8 contemporary Korean artists who will create intriguing installations that explore issues related to global interaction and intercultural contrasts and relationships. (more - pdf)
The Contemporary Museum
September 19 through November 16, 2003, at TCMs Makiki Heights galleries. The exhibition will include sculpture, photography, video and mixed media works by some of South Korea's most prominent and thought-provoking artists. (more - pdf)
Honolulu Academy of Arts
September 18-November 9, 2003. The Academys exhibitions will focus on contemporary Korean artists working in a variety of media, including fiber, ceramics, metal, clay, paper and lacquer. (more - pdf)
- Free Korean Family Festival at Academy in October
The Honolulu Academy of Arts will host a free Korean Family Festival on Sunday, October 5, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Activities will include art projects for kids, traditional Korean dance and music performances, and a performance by Honolulu Theatre for Youth in the Doris Duke Theater. (more - pdf)\
- Korean Artist Komelia Honja Okim featured in Exhibition
The Honolulu Academy of Arts presents a solo exhibition by Korean-born artist Komelia Hongja Okim in the Graphic Arts Gallery September 18 through November 16, 2003. This exhibition, Reflections of Two Worlds: A Korean American Heritage - Metalwork by Komelia Hongja Okim, will feature recent silver hollowware and figurative forms, many worked in the Kum-Boo (Korean gold-foil overlay) technique, a challenging and traditional process rarely practiced today, as well as silver and mixed-metal sculpture.
