ABOUT SHOEBOX SCULPTURE

Exhibition Summary

The 10th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition gathers a large number of well-known artists from Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Norway, Taiwan, The Netherlands, and United Kingdom. Their sculptures are exceptionally diverse in concept, media, and techniques. Inspiring and thought provoking, the works represent a full range--from political and social commentary to humor, from personal narrative to enigmatic statements, and from realism to abstraction. These sculptures demonstrate the imaginative spirit and the endless creativity of the artist.

Working in this small scale presents numerous challenges to the artists. Details become magnified, each added element or nuance of form, surface patina, and texture is an integral part of the conceptual dialogue. Each artist knows the viewer is immediately drawn into the intimacy of the scale, where close scrutiny is the expectation. For some artists the format of this exhibition demands a shift in approach, however, what remains constant is their personal visual language developed over the years.

After its initial showing at the University of Hawaii Art Gallery, 81 works from The 10th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition is scheduled to travel to 15 venues, in the U.S., and Korea. Previous Shoebox Sculpture exhibits organized by the University of Hawai'i Art Gallery were shown in Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Canada, and Guam as well as the U.S. mainland.
