Johnny Coleman, born in 1958 in Saugus, Massachusetts, received a BFA, 1989, from Otis Art Institute of the Parsons School of Design, Los Angeles and was named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, 1997. He holds a MFA, 1992, from the University of California at San Diego. He is an associate professor of African American Studies and Art at Oberlin College. He has received numerous grants from the Ohio Arts Council and Oberlin College and a National Endowment for the Arts Projects Grant, 1994.

This birdhouse is constructed in memory of my mother, Florence McCoy. Its extended journey, one she would have enjoyed, is intended to celebrate the flight of her spirit.
