John Kapel was born in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. He has a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio, a MFA from Cranbrook Academy, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and received a Carnegie Fellowship to Charles University, Prague, Czechoslovakia.

The sculpture draws on images reminiscent of the past, while the colors and surface treatment elicit images of archaic art forms.
