Born in 1933 in Wailuku, Maui, Shige Yamada has a BA, 1955, BEd, 1956, and a MFA, 1966, from the University of Hawai‘i. He was designated a Living Treasure of Hawai‘i by the Honpa Hongwanji Mission in 1993 and, in 2005, was one of two artists to be included in the Maui One-Hundred by The Maui News. Yamada has taught art in California, Hawai‘i, and Japan and authored the book Ceramics in Hawai‘i, 1977.
