Ethnomusicology Student Wins Prestigious Prize

Benjamin Fairfield, a second year PhD student in the music department, won the prestigious Ki Mantle Hood Prize for best student paper presented at the 2012 Society for Ethnomusicology Southern California Chapter Conference.

Mr. Fairfield’s area of specialty is music of the minority group Karen in northern Thailand. His award winning article based on his fieldwork in Thailand is entitled “I am Tenaku: The Reification and Textuality of ‘Chi’ Suwichan’s Karen Harp” and is published in the current issue of Ethnomusicology Review, a peer-reviewed journal out of UCLA.
