New Interim Associate Dean
Professor Tom Brislin has joined the College of Arts and Humanities as Interim Associate Dean. In his more than 20 years at UHM he served as the long-time chair of the Academy for Creative Media in the College, and led the successful movement in 2001-2002 to establish the academic, creative and community foundations for the university’s first film school.
He also served as chair of the Departments of Journalism and Communication, during the formative years of their combining as the School of Communications in the College of Social Sciences.
He first joined the UHM faculty in 1977. During the 1980s he was a journalist for the Honolulu Advertiser, as the city/metro editor as well as education reporter and editor.
Dr. Brislin earned his B.A. at the University of Guam, and his M.A. and Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. He enjoys a reputation as an international scholar in the field of Media Ethics and is published in both U.S. and Japanese journals. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Mass Media Ethics and Visual Communication Quarterly. He was twice a Fulbright scholar in Germany, and a senior fellow in the RIAS Berlin-Kommission. He has conducted Study Abroad programs in Berlin, Annecy, and Paris.
