Honokaa HeritageJune 3, Hilo — The North Hawaii Education and Research Center celebrates the completion of the Honokaa Heritage Murals project with a public presentation.
Doubling RecyclingJune 2, Hilo — The Mixed Recycling Program aims to double the amount of waste headed to the county landfill each week by creating a more seamless and user friendly operation.
Adolescent ObesityMay 27, Hilo — Timothy Halliday and Sally Kwak publish a study on correlations in weight gain between adolescents and their friends and possible school-based interventions.
Going BananasMay 27, Manoa — The Lyon Arboretum features the exhibit No End to the Banana highlighting biodiversity and the importance of preserving cultural plants.
Substance Abuse Research AwardMay 11, Hilo — Kaycee "Nahe" Kawano wins the summer scholar award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse for her work on ecological factors in drug use among Native Hawaiian youth.Spotlight
Renovating Lives
Kapiolani Community College remodeled and renovated the Palolo Ohana Learning Center for the residents of Palolo Valley Homes. Kapiolani and its service learning students have been working with the community for 14 years and have helped 52 public housing residents to college.
The highlight of the renovations is the computer lab and digital video and audio editing room. The computer lab is equipped with 35 new computers hooked up and ready, complete with Internet connectivity and green technology features to reduce energy consumption. The digital video and audio editing room is soundproof and includes three computers with the latest video editing, animation and recording software.
The center also features a public health nursing room and a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes and healthy cooking demonstrations.
