    Encyclopedia article from Encarta. Describes the natural environment, the peoples of Asia, patterns of economic development, and history. Includes zoomable maps and links to more detailed sources of information on particular topics.

  • ThingsAsian : Experience Asia through the Eyes of a Traveler
    Not the typical academic site listed on these pages; therefore, tread with caution. That said, the site contains a marvelous collection of personal recollections of travelers to Asia, many of whom are amateur writers and photographers. By registering, potential writers and photographers can post their travel stories or photo essays on the site. Stories require the approval of an editor before being posted. The stories and photo essays cover a huge range of topics on every (even North Korea) country of Asia. Many of them contain fascinating bits of information (for example, the story about a North Korean restaurant in the Cambodian town of Siem Reap where Angkor Wat is located). A rather sparsely populated travel section lists recommended (or to be avoided) accomodations, restaurants, shopping, and tourist spots. Also included is a gallery of art for sale by Vietnamese artists.

  • World Fact Book
    The World Fact Book, published by the CIA, contains a variety information on the countries of the world, including: geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues. Updated weekly.

  • World Sites Atlas
    Contains a variety of basic information about the individual countries of world: geography, people, government, economy, communications and transportation, and foreign relations. Also has images of national flags and political maps created by the site and links to other map sites.

  • World Statesmen - Asia
    Information on countries of the world, including historical chronologies, maps, flags, recordings of national anthems, and lists of rulers.


Anthropology/Archaeology

  • Asian Ethnicity (UH only)
    Online journal. Frequency: 3 issues/year. Available online: 2000- (12 month delay). Provides a cross-disciplinary, international venue for the publication of well-researched articles about ethnic groups and ethnic relations in Asia. Covers any time period, although the greatest focus is on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In broad terms the geographical region of concern for the journal is bounded by Lake Baikal to the north, Japan to the east, Java to the south and the Caspian Sea to the west. The most populous, and probably most significant, contemporary political states to be included are China, India and Indonesia.

    A still relatively limited site featuring new Asian artists and their works. Most artists are from Malaysia, with a smattering of others from Singapore, China, India, and Indonesia.

    Online database. Coverage: 1996-current. A database of EIU publications analyzing and forecasting the economic, political and business environments of almost 200 countries.   • National Bureau of Asian Research
    The NBR website contains news of its programs on security concerns, economic growth, governance questions, politics, international relations, and U.S. interests in Northeast Asia, Eurasia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Asia Pacific regionally. The website also contains the Strategic Asia database which contains military, political, and economic data and Access Asia which consists of databases of information on contemporary Asian affairs and policy-related issues and a directory of Asia specialists.

  • Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC)
    PECC is a tripartite partnership of senior individuals from business and industry, government, academic and other intellectual circles with an interest in the Asia-Pacific region. Website describes the goals of PECC and contains the full text of its publications on trade, finance and other economic topics.

  • Telecom Asia
    Online journal. Available online: Selected articles: 2001 (Dec)-current. Frequency: 11 issues/year. From the publishers's website: "Circulated to telecommunications carriers (PTTs) and to the communications departments of businesses, industry and others who use and operate commercial and private networks. It is edited for planning, engineering and operational managers responsible for the design, installation, marketing and maintenance of public or private telecom systems and networks."   • United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)
    Website detailing UNESCAP's activities with the full text of many of its publications on contemporary social and economic issues in Asia. Contains substantial socio-economic and demographic statistical data and its quarterly "Statistical Indicators for Asia and the Pacific."

  • Wireless Asia (UH only)
    Online journal. Available online: 2001-current. Frequency: 11 issues/year. Publisher's website : Selected articles: 2002-current.     Lists of the current and former administrative divisions of countries, with selected demographic and economic data and links to maps.

  • Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law
    A project of the Law Faculty, National University of Singapore, the site contains reports of activities of the Centre and the full text of selected publications by its members.

  • GeoNet Names Server
    Provides access to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names' (US BGN) database of foreign geographic feature names. The database is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the US BGN. Data available for download in tab-delimited text format.

  • Global Statistics
    Website containing data on the population of regions, countries, provinces and cities. Also statistics on economic factors like wealth and infrastructure, geographic features, and more.

  • IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas
    The World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) is a commission of IUCN - The World Conservation Union. Its website contains environmental news and information about its programs arranged by region (for Asia: East, South and Southeast) as well as a publications page similarly arranged by region. Many of the publications are available online in pdf format.

  • World Gazetteer

  • AskAsia Map & Timeline Library (Asia Society)
    A K-12 site for teachers. Consists of a collection of simple but useful and clear maps of the countries of Asia. Includes Political, topograhical, and some thematic maps dating from the 1980s and 1990s.

  • David Rumsey Map Collection
    A pioneer in map digitization and presentation, Rumsey's site contains over 10,000 historical maps online. While the focus is 17th and 18th century North and South American maps, the site includes several hundred Asia maps. The collection has 4 different viewers, some of which must be downloaded to use. The more sophisticated viewing options require a little effort to learn, but they are well worth it. Using the Insight Java Client viewer takes longer to load but searching is more efficient, and it also provides easy access to the Japanese Historical Maps Collection of the East Asia Collection, University of California Berkeley Libarary.

  • Images of Early Maps on the Web - Asia

  • Map Collections: 1500-2004 (Library of Congress)
    From its rich map collection, the Library of Congress has digitized a small percentage of its maps, among which are a few dozen Asian maps. Site is searchable by place, subject, creator, and map title.

  • National Bureau of Asian Research
    The NBR website contains news of its programs on security concerns, economic growth, governance questions, politics, international relations, and U.S. interests in Northeast Asia, Eurasia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Asia Pacific regionally. The website also contains the Strategic Asia database which contains military, political, and economic data and Access Asia which consists of databases of information on contemporary Asian affairs and policy-related issues and a directory of Asia specialists.

  • Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC)
    PECC is a tripartite partnership of senior individuals from business and industry, government, academic and other intellectual circles with an interest in the Asia-Pacific region. Website describes the goals of PECC and contains the full text of its publications on trade, finance and other economic topics.

  • Agenda Asia
    Agenda Asia is a database of Asian Studies conferences, workshops and seminars. It is a project of the European Alliance for Asian Studies.

  • Aardvark: Asian Resources for Librarians
    Aardvark contains the full-text of a variety of articles on new information techonologies; lists of Asian databases; lists of links to Asian digital libraries, library schools, and professional organizations; conferences and exhibitions of interest to Asian librarians, and the full-text of current and past issues of Access Magazine, a publication on information technology in Asia.

  • Access Asia
    AccessAsia is a clearinghouse for information on contemporary Asian affairs and policy-related issues. The project maintains several databases, including a specialist database that tracks the expertise and current research of leading experts on contemporary Asian affairs, links to news sources, publication lists, and the full text of reports.

  • Asia Resources on the World Wide Web

    A portal with a vast array of online resources on almost every conceivable subject about Asia.   • Google Directory Regional Asia

    Part of the Open Directory Project, the "largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web." Arrangment by country with more detailed geographic entities and subject categories for each country. The number of websites is listed next to each category.

  • Portal to Asian Internet Resources (PAIR)
    Previously known as the Digital Asia Library, the Portal to Asian Internet Resources (PAIR) offers scholars, students and the interested public more than six thousand professionally selected, cataloged and annotated online resources. A cooperative project of the libraries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota, and Ohio State University.

    An international directory of search engines. Arranged by country.

  • Yahoo Directory on Asia
    The Yahoo Search Engine's directory of websites related to Asia. The site divides information by countries, category, including information by region, arts, business, computers, education, government, health, science and more.
