CATHOLICISM IN EAST TIMORThe Portuguese traders came to East Timor in search of Sandalwood in the early 1500s. Dominican friars followed the traders in 1561. Since then the role of the church in East Timor society has been very strong. Today, around 90 per cent of the total population proclaim themselves as Catholic.
