McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 UH Installer

The UH installer for McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.8 with scan engine 5400 and McAfee Agent 4.5 is available to the UH community. The anti-spyware module is now integrated with VSE 8.8. The installer includes settings pre-configured for use at UH.

The UH installer is intended for Windows computers without any anti-virus program installed or for those upgrading from older versions of McAfee VSE (for computers with at least 1 GB RAM and a "faster" processor, i.e. computers not more than 2 years old). If you have an older Windows computer with less than 1 GB RAM, please purchase a new computer with at least 4 GB RAM or migrate to another anti-virus software that runs in less than 1 GB RAM.

All anti-virus programs (except McAfee VSE 8.5 and VSE 8.7) should be uninstalled first before using the UH VSE 8.8 installer. Please REBOOT after uninstalling your existing anti-virus program.

Supported Environments for VirusScan Enterprise on Microsoft Windows

VSE 8.8 is supported on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2003 Server, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 Release 2. A complete list of supported environments is located in McAfee Knowledgebase article KB51111.

Installation Instructions

  1. Download a copy of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 UH installer (uhvse88.exe) from http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1254 and save it to your desktop.
  2. Make sure that you are logged in with an account that has administrator privileges. Close all applications, including VM sessions.
  3. If you have an existing non-VSE anti-virus software, you must uninstall it first.
    • For Windows XP: go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Select your old anti-virus program and click Remove.
    • For Vista/Windows 7: go to Start, Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features. Select your old anti-virus program and click Uninstall.

    Please RESTART your system before proceeding with the installation.

  4. Double click the uhvse88.exe self-extracting file to extract the contents.
    • For Vista/Windows 7: when prompted to allow program (uhvse88.exe) from unknown publisher to make changes on the computer, click Allow. Please wait while the files are unzipped.
    • For Vista/Windows 7: when prompted, "It is recommended that the following product(s) be removed: Windows Defender. Would you like to do so now?", click Yes.
  5. Click View Readme to show the readme file, if desired. Click Next.
  6. For License Expiry Type, select Perpetual from the pull down menu. Leave the country selection as is. If you agree with the terms of the license agreement, select "I accept the terms in the license agreement". Click OK.

    (If you have McAfee VSE 8.5 or 8.7 installed, the installer will detect it. Check "Preserve Settings" (recommended). Click Next. )

  7. Select Typical for Setup Type. Click Next.
  8. Select Standard Protection for access protection level. Click Next.
  9. Click Install to begin. Please wait while the VSE installer copies files to your hard drive and updates your registry.

    It may take awhile (several seconds) at the beginning and may appear to be hung. Please be patient.

  10. VirusScan Enterprise has been successfully installed. Do NOT check "Update Now" and "Run On-Demand Scan". Click FINISH.
  11. You will receive a message:

    "The network driver is installed but you must restart the computer in order to load it. Distributed File Scanning, Port Blocking, Infection Trace, and Infection Trace Blocking are disabled until the computer is restarted." Click OK.

  12. You must RESTART your computer to load VirusScan settings. After rebooting, update to the current DAT files.

     

Post Installation Instructions

You must update VSE to the current DAT to enable VSE to work properly. Scan your hard drive after the DAT files are updated.

Update DAT to current version

  1. Right click the vshield icon in the system tray.

    For Windows 7: click the up arrow (show hidden icons) in the system tray and right click the vshield icon.

  2. Click Update Now.

    Note: the initial update may take up to 15 minutes.

Verifying Your Installation

  1. Right click the vshield icon in the system tray.
  2. Click About VirusScan Enterprise.
  3. "About VirusScan Enterprise" reports "VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise 8.8".
  4. Scan engine version should report 5400.1158 (or later).
  5. DAT version should be later than 6384.0000. If your DAT version is 6384.0000, please run Update Now.
  6. "DAT create on" should be today's date.
  7. Buffer Overflow and Access Protection DAT version should report 540 (or later).
  8. Installed patches should report "none".
  9. Installed modules should report "none".

Scan your hard drive(s) by running Full Scan

  1. Right click the vshield icon in the system tray.
  2. Click VirusScan Console.
  3. Right click Full Scan.
  4. Click Start.

Notes:

If Microsoft Security Center warns that "McAfee VirusScan Enterprise might be out of date", run Update Now. You may need to restart your computer to clear the warning.
