The UH installer for McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.8 with Patch 3 Repost is available for Windows 8 Pro and Windows Server 2012 machines only.
Note: McAfee certified VSE 8.8 with Patch 3 Repost for Windows 8 Pro and Windows Server 2012. If you installed VSE 8.8 with Patch 2 Repost earlier which "works" with Windows 8 Pro (there are known compatibility issues), you must uninstall it first before installing VSE 8.8 with Patch 3 Repost.
For Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7: Please continue to use VSE 8.8 with Patch 1 UH installer. Install Patch 2 over the existing VSE 8.8 with Patch 1. See http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1338 for installation instructions.
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 software is available for download from http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1247 for eligible UH faculty, staff, and students.
Installation Instructions
- Download a copy of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 with Patch 3 UH installer (uhvse88rp3-w8.exe) from http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1247 and save it to your desktop.
- Make sure that you are logged in with an account that has administrator privileges. Close all applications, including VM sessions.
- If VSE 8.8 with Patch 2 Repost is currently installed, you must uninstall it first.
For Windows 8: move your cursor to the upper right corner to open the Charms bar. Click Settings > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select McAfee VirusScan Enterprise and click Uninstall.
- Select McAfee Agent and click Uninstall
Please RESTART your system before proceeding with the installation.
- Double click the uhvse88rp3-w8.exe self-extracting file to extract the contents.
For Windows 8:
- You will receive a warning that "Windows SmartScreen protected your PC and prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk." Click more info.
- The next window reports unknown publisher and app uhvse88rp3-w8.exe. Click run anyway
For Windows 8: when prompted to allow program (uhvse88rp3-w8.exe) from unknown publisher to make changes on the computer, click Yes. Please wait while the files are unzipped.
- Click View Readme to show the readme file, if desired. Click Next.
- For License Expiry Type, select Perpetual from the pull down menu. Leave the country selection as is. If you agree with the terms of the license agreement, select "I accept the terms in the license agreement". Click OK.
- Select Typical for Setup Type. Click Next.
- Select Standard Protection for access protection level. Click Next.
- Click Install to begin. Please wait while the VSE installer copies files to your hard drive and updates your registry.
It may take awhile (several seconds) at the beginning and may appear to be hung. Please be patient.
- VirusScan Enterprise has been successfully installed. "Update Now" is checked and grayed out. Do NOT check "Run On-Demand Scan". Click FINISH.
- McAfee will autoupdate the DAT to the current DAT. Please wait. Ignore messages that VirusScan is out of date during this time.
- You will receive a message:
"The network driver is installed but you must restart the computer in order to load it. Distributed File Scanning, Port Blocking, Infection Trace, and Infection Trace Blocking are disabled until the computer is restarted." Scanning, Port Blocking, Infection Trace, and Infection Trace Blocking are disabled until the computer is restarted." Click OK.
- You must RESTART your computer to load VirusScan settings.
For Windows 8: move your cursor to the upper right corner to open the Charms bar. Click Settings > Power > Restart.
Verifying Your Installation
- Right click the vshield icon in the system tray.
- Click About VirusScan Enterprise.
- "About VirusScan Enterprise" reports "VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise 8.8".
- Scan engine version should report 5400.1158 (or later).
- DAT version should be later than 6959.0000.
- "DAT created on" should be today's date.
- Buffer Overflow and Access Protection DAT version should report 589 (or later).
- Installed patches should report "3".
- Installed modules should report "none".
Post Installation Instructions
Schedule the following tasks: Autoupdate, Targeted Scan and Full Scan. *new*
(By default, Autoupdate is set to Daily at 5:00 pm. Targeted Scan and Full Scan are not enabled.)
Scan your hard drive after the DAT files are updated. DAT files are current if the "DAT created on" date is today's date.
Schedule Autoupdate Task
(ITS recommends Autoupdate for DAT updates is run Daily.)
- Right click vshield icon in system tray.
- Click VirusScan Console.
- Right click Autoupdate task, click Properties.
- Click the Schedule button.
- Click the Schedule tab.
- Run task should be set to Daily.
- Click Start Time. Use up and down arrows to set to desired local time.
Note: select a time when the computer is powered on.
- Click Apply, OK.
- In the next window, click Apply, OK.
Schedule Targeted Scan Task
(ITS recommends Targeted Scan is run twice a week. Adjust the schedule to meet your security requirements.)
- Right click vshield icon in system tray.
- Click VirusScan Console.
- Right click Targeted Scan task, click Properties.
- Click the Schedule button.
- On the Task tab, check "enable (scheduled task runs at specified time)".
- Click Schedule tab.
- Run task should be set to Weekly.
- Click box under Start Time. User up and down arrows to set to desired local time.
Note: select a time when the computer is powered on.
- If Weekly is selected, check day(s) of week to run the scan.
- Click Apply, OK.
- In the next window, click Apply, OK.
Schedule Full Scan Task
(ITS recommends Full Scan is run once, every other week, i.e. twice a month. Adjust the schedule to meet your security requirements.)
- Right click vshield icon in system tray.
- Click VirusScan Console.
- Right click Full Scan task, click Properties.
- Click the Schedule button.
- On the Task tab, check "enable (scheduled task runs at specified time)".
- Click Schedule tab.
- Run task should be set to Weekly.
- Click box under Start Time. User up and down arrows to set to desired local time.
Note: select a time when the computer is powered on.
- If Weekly is selected, change to "every 2 weeks" under Schedule Task Weekly.
- Check day of the week to run the scan. Do not select same day as Targeted Scan.
- Click Apply, OK.
- In the next window, click Apply, OK.
Update DAT to current version
- Right click the vshield icon in the system tray.
For Windows 8: click the up arrow (show hidden icons) in the system tray and right click the vshield icon.
- Click Update Now.
Note: VSE 8.8 Patch 3 Repost only updates DATs from McAfee repositories. It does not update DATs from UH FTP.
Scan your hard drive(s) by running Full Scan
- Right click the vshield icon in the system tray.
- Click VirusScan Console.
- Right click Full Scan.
- Click Start.
Notes:
If Microsoft Security Center warns that "McAfee VirusScan Enterprise might be out of date", run Update Now. You may need to restart your computer to clear the warning.
