Relaying not allowed (Error 550 or 530)

The outgoing mail server (SMTP) cannot verify who you are and will not allow you to send mail. You will need to change your outgoing mail (SMTP) settings to use your UH Username and password for authentication.

Microsoft Outlook Express on Windows

  1. from the Inbox click on the Tools menu then choose Accounts
  2. click on the Properties button
  3. click on the Servers tab
  4. verify that the My server requires authentication checkbox under the Outgoing Mail Server section is checked
  5. click on the Settings button
  6. verify that the Use same settings as my incoming mail server option is selected
  7. click on the Advanced tab
  8. verify that the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox is checked
  9. click on the OK button to close the Properties pop-up
  10. click on the Close button to close the Accounts pop-up

Microsoft Outlook 2000/XP/2003 on Windows

  1. click on the Tools menu and choose Email Accounts
  2. verify that View or change existing e-mail accounts is selected then click on the Next button
  3. select the account that corresponds to your @hawaii.edu account then click on the Change button
  4. click on the More Settings button
  5. click on the Outgoing Server tab
  6. verify that the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication checkbox is checked
  7. verify that the Use same settings as my incoming mail server option is selected
  8. click on the Advanced tab
  9. verify that the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox is checked
  10. click on the OK button to close the Internet E-mail Settings pop-up
  11. click on the Next button
  12. click on the Finish button

Eudora 6 on Windows

  1. click on the Tools menu and choose Options
  2. click on the Sending Mail category
  3. verify that the Allow Authentication checkbox is checked
  4. under the Secure Sockets when Sending section, choose Required, Alternate Port
  5. click on the OK button to close the Options pop-up

Eudora on Mac OS 10 and 9

  1. click on the Special menu and choose Settings
  2. scroll the left-pane and click on the SSL category
  3. verify that the SSL for SMTP setting is Required (Alternate Port)
  4. under the Alternate Port SSL Negotiation section, choose Maximum Compatibility
  5. click on the OK button to close the Settings pop-up

Netscape Mail 7.02 / 7.1 / 7.2

  1. click on the Edit menu and choose Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
  2. click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) item from the left-pane
  3. verify that the Port is set to 25
  4. verify that the Use name and password checkbox is checked
  5. verify that your UH Username is in the User name field
  6. for version 7.02 / 7.1 verify that the Always option is selected for Use secure connection (SSL)
  7. for version 7.2 verify that the TLS option is selected for Use secure connection
  8. click on the OK button to close the SMTP Server pop-up

Netscape 6

  1. click on the Edit menu and choose Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
  2. on the left side, select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  3. on the right side, check the box for Use name and password.  In the User Name box, type your UH Username.  Under Use secure connection (SSL), select Always
  4. click on the OK button to close the SMTP Server pop-up

ThunderBird 1.5

  1. click on the Tools menu and choose Account Settings
  2. click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) item from the left-pane
  3. select the mail.hawaii.edu server then click on the Edit button
  4. verify that the Port is set to 25
  5. verify that the Use name and password checkbox is checked
  6. verify that your UH Username is in the User name field
  7. verify that the TLS option is selected for Use secure connection
  8. click on the OK button to close the SMTP Server pop-up
  9. click on the OK button to close the Account Settings pop-up

Mac Mail on Mac OS 10.3 and 10.4

  1. click on the Mail menu and choose Preferences
  2. click on the Accounts icon
  3. on the left side, select your UH account.
  4. on the right side, click on Account Information.  Click on Server Settings...
  5. check the box for Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).  Under Authentication select Password.  In the username and password fields, type your UH Username and password. Click OK
  6. close the window and click Save

Mac Mail on Mac OS 10.2

  1. click on the Mail menu and choose Preferences
  2. click on the Accounts icon.
  3. select your UH account and click on Edit
  4. click on Account Information
  5. click on Options
  6. check the box for Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).  Under Authentication select Password.  In the username and password fields, type your UH Username and password
  7. click OK.  Click OK again
  8. close the Preferences window

Entourage 2004 on Mac OS 10

  1. click on the Tools menu and choose Accounts
  2. select the account that corresponds to your @hawaii.edu account then click on the Edit button
  3. under the Sending mail section click on the Click here for advanced sending options button
  4. verify that the SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL) checkbox is checked
  5. verify that the SMTP server requires authentication checkbox is checked
  6. verify that the Use same settings as my receiving mail server option is selected
  7. close the pop-up
  8. click on the OK button to close the Edit Account pop-up

Entourage X on Mac OS 10 and Outlook Express 5 on Mac OS 9

  1. click on the Tools menu and choose Account
  2. select the account that corresponds to your @hawaii.edu account then click on the Edit button
  3. click on the Click here for advanced sending options button
  4. check the box for SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL)
  5. check the box for Override default SMTP port and enter 465 in the box
  6. check the box for SMTP service requires authentication.  Select  the Use the same settings as receiving mail server button
  7. close the box by clicking on the small square in the upper left corner, then click OK
