This document is to help ease the transition from Windows 95, 98, ME, to Windows 2000. It is intended to show the user some of the changes they may notice when first starting Windows 2000.
Just like in the previous versions of Windows, the Start button on the task bar is a good place to start for launching programs and getting to system settings.
The Control Panel is where many of the settings on your computer can be set, such as setting up new hardware (i.e. a new printer). To get to the Control Panel, click on the Start button, then click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
If you are used to Windows 95, 98, or ME, then the Administrative Tools will be new to you. It contains shortcuts used to do more advanced changes to the Windows 2000 system.
For instance, Computer Management under Administrative Tools lets you manage many of the security features, disk partitioning, valid users for the machine, services, and other utilities for the computer.
The new file path layout of Windows 2000 puts many of your folders in different places. If you are used to Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME you will find your folders are in different locations. For instance, if Windows 98 is installed on your C:\, then your My Documents folder is located in C:\. For Windows 2000 if you install it to C:\ then the path to your My Documents folder is C:\Documents and Settings\<login name>\My Documents. Or if you wanted to find your desktop folder it would be C:\Documents and Settings\<login name>\Desktop.
Windows update is the place to go for all your latest Windows 2000 updates. It is important to stay current, especially for security updates. Prevention is the always the best medicine. To perform Windows Update, launch Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu at the top, and select Windows Update.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process.
Just like all the previous version of Windows, removing programs can be done using the Add/Remove Program tool in the Control Panel.
To add or remove a program, run the Add/Remove utility.
Next, select the program you would like to remove and click Change/Remove. Then follow the on screen instructions to remove the program.
