SSH Questions

  • General
     
    1. What are SSH/SSL secured connections? [top]
      SSH/SSL secured connections encrypt your password over the network. This provides better protection in not allowing critical information and possible identity theft problems from occuring.
       
    2. I usually telnet from one unix system into another. Can I telnet to uhunix.hawaii.edu? [top]
      If you use the command telnet username@uhunix.hawaii.edu to connect from another unix sytem into uhunix.hawaii.edu, the command will not work. Instead, please use ssh username@uhunix.hawaii.edu. NOTE: If your unix box does not have SSH installed, then ssh username@uhunix.hawaii.edu will not work.
       
    3. Which encryption protocol will ITS use for the hawaii.edu servers? [top]
      ITS will use ssh2 for the encryption protocol.
       
  • MS Windows
     
    1. For MS Windows, which SSH application will ITS support? [top]
      ITS will support Secure Shell (SSH).
       
    2. I currently use the built-in telnet windows application. Will I be able to connect? [top]
      The built-in telnet application that comes with MS Windows does not use encryption protocols. Therefore, this application will not connect to the hawaii.edu servers.
        
    3. Can I print to my desktop printer using SSH? [top]
      Yes. You may continue to print as you normally do.
       
    4. Where can I download SSH? [top]
      SSH is available for download at ftp://ftp.hawaii.edu/pub/dss/ibmpc/ssh329.exe.
       
    5. How do I install and use SSH? [top]
      Documentation on how to install SSH is available online in HTML format.
        
  • Macintosh
     
    1. I have Mac OS X 10.3.x, which SSH application will ITS support? [top]
      For Mac OS X 10.3.x and later, ITS will support iTerm.
       
    2. I currently use NCSA Telnet 2.x, will I be able to connect? [top]
      NCSA Telnet 2.x does not use encryption protocols. Therefore, this application will not connect to the hawaii.edu servers.
       
    3. Can I print to my desktop printer? [top]
      Yes. You may continue to print as you normally do.
       
    4. Where can I download the SSH clients? [top]
      You may download iTerm from http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/789
       
    5. How do I install and use the SSH clients? [top]
      iTerm installation and usage instructions are available online at http://www.hawaii.edu/itsdocs/mac/iterm.pdf.

  • MS Windows
     
    1. For MS Windows, which sFTP application will ITS support? [top]
      ITS supports FileZilla.
       
    2. Where can I download FileZilla? [top]
      SSH is available for download at http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1735.
       
    3. How do I install and use FileZilla? [top]
      FileZilla installation instructions are avaiilable online in HTML format.
                  
    4. I use Dreamweaver, I can no longer transfer my files. Can this be fixed? [top]
      If you are using Dreamweaver MX 2004 or higher, please enable the "Use Secure FTP (SFTP)" option. Older versions of Dreamweaver will not work. SSH tunneling is no longer supported.

    1. What is SSL? [top]
      SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. This is a protocol that establishes an authenticated and encrypted session between client and server.
       
    2. What is TLS? [top]
      TLS stands for Transport Layer Security. Like SSL, TLS ensures privacy between client and server. TLS is a successor to SSL.
       
    3. I use Norton AntiVirus. Does it affect SSL? [top]
      Norton Antivirus, does not allow the sending of email through SSL. Please turn off outgoing scanning.
       
  • MS Windows
     
    1. For MS Windows, which SSL applications will ITS support? [top]
      ITS will support  MS Outlook 2003, MS Outlook2007, and Mozilla Thunderbird.
         
    2. In MS Outlook, how do I enable this option? [top]
      MS Outlook XP/2003
      MS Outlook 2007
        
    3. In Mozilla Thunderbird, how do I enable this option? [top]
      Mozilla Thunderbird on page number 10.
