Vista: Unable to Disable On-access Scanner in VirusScan Enterprise 8.5 with Patch 4

For McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5 in Windows Vista after installing cumulative patch 4

Disable On-Access Scan is grayed out when you right click the McAfee vshield icon in the Windows system tray. Also, in VirusScan Console, Disable is grayed out when you right click On-Access Scanner. "Prevent McAfee services from being stopped" is unchecked in Access Protection properties. You are logged into Windows Vista using a non-administrator account.

Solution - you must be logged into Windows Vista with an administrator account to enable or disable on-access scan.

To Disable On-access Scan:
1. Login to Vista using an administrator login.
2. Right click the McAfee vshield icon in the system tray. Click Disable On-Access Scan.
3. McAfee Vshield icon in system tray will have a red circle on it.
4. On-access Scanner, Access Protection and Buffer Overflow Protection in VirusScan Console will also be disabled.


To Enable On-access scan:
1. Login to Vista using an administrator login.
2. Right click the McAfee vshield icon in the system tray. Click Enable On-Access Scan.
3. The red circle on the McAfee vshield icon in system tray will disappear.
4. Right click the McAfee vshield icon in the system tray. Click VirusScan Console.
5. Right click Access Protection. Click Enable.
6. Right click Buffer Overflow Protection. Click Enable.
7. Close VirusScan Console.
