WebMail Information
This article is intended to provide a list of the currently noted issues with the UH WebMail application. The list below are issues that have been reported to ITS, and confirmed through testing. If you encounter problems with UH WebMail that are not listed below, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
For reference, the following documents may be useful if using UH WebMail for the first time.
ATTENTION: WebMail has a timeout of 1 hour. If your WebMail session has been idle for 1 hour, you will get the message "Session time out, please login again" when you click on any of the links. When you click on OK, you will be returned to the login screen. Please be aware of this and save your composed messages (as draft) often.
Current List of Issues with UH WebMail
All Web Browsers
- [As of 6/19/09, the vendor is working on a fix for this bug.] If you use parentheses in your password, you may be unable to login to WebMail, even if you can login to other websites using your UH Username and password, such as MyUH or the UH Username Management site.
- [As of 6/19/09, an enhancement request has been made to the vendor to change this behavior, but no ETA on if/when this will be addressed] When you print a message using the "Printable" link, the Attachments line is not included in the header, so you cannot see what attachments came with the message.
- [As of 6/19/09, this has been reported to the vendor, but no immediate announcement on a fix is available.] When you reply to a message, the reply window comes up with the cursor positioned in the "To" box.
- You may receive Javascript errors in Internet Explorer 7. If you do, please clear the cache and try again. (See http://www.hawaii.edu/askus/726 for instructions)
- If you wish to send a web address (url) in an email and have the recipient be able to click on the url, you need to do one of the following:
- Send the message in Plain Text format (click on the Plain Text link to convert the message)
- If you want to send the message in HTML format, you need to highlight the url, then click on the "Insert Hyperlink" icon (all the way to the right). Re-type the url in the box that appears, then click OK.
- The default view of your messages is "Default". However, this view doesn't show the deleted messages. So if you have your "Deleting message from folders" setting (Options->Mail->Settings) set to "Mark messages as deleted" it will appear that deleted messages "disappear". You can only see the deleted messages if you set your "View" setting to "All". It is not currently possible to change the default view from "Default" to "All". If you do not have your "View" setting on "All", you cannot expunge your deleted messages (when you select Expunge nothing happens). You can have your deleted messages expunged when you logout of UH WebMail. Click on Options, then Mail, then Settings, and make sure the box for "Remove deleted messages from Inbox on logout" is checked.
- [As of 6/19/09, this has been reported to the vendor, but no immediate announcement on a fix is available.] If you have your "Deleting message from folders" setting (Options->Mail->Settings) set to "Mark messages as deleted", and you change your default Language (Options->Global), you will see two Trash folders in the language you chose. If you change to a different language, this extra Trash folder will remain. For example, if you change your language to Spanish, you will see two folders labeled "Papelera". If you change your language back to English, you will get back a Trash folder but still have a Papelera folder. You can delete this extra folder by clicking on "Manage folders" on the left side, then select the folder you want to delete, then click Delete.
- [The vendor states that this is the expected behavior, so no fix is planned.] If you have your "Deleting message from folders" setting (Options->Mail->Settings) set to "Mark messages as deleted", and you change your View to "All" and then read a message, if you then click on Delete, the Delete button changes to Undelete and you are not moved on to the next message in the Inbox.
Due to the above problems, ITS recommends that you set your "Deleted Messages" setting as follows:
- Click on Options, then Mail, then Settings.
- Select the Move Deleted Messages to folder Trash option.
- Check the box for "Empty messages from this folder on logout". [Note: this means messages in the Trash will be permanently erased when you logout.]
- Click on Save.
If you chose not to check the box to empty the Trash on logout, be sure to check your Trash mailbox every so often and delete what you do not need, as messages in the Trash are still taking up your quota space.
Firefox Issues
[As of 6/19/09, this has been reported to the vendor, but no immediate announcement on a fix is available.] If you are including the original message in your replies, you may not be able to delete anything from the included message. The workaround is to type anything (even one character) somewhere in the reply. You should then be able to delete what you want from the included message.
Safari Issues
Due to the following problems in Safari, ITS recommends that Macintosh users use Firefox for UH WebMail.
- [As of 6/19/09, this has been reported to the vendor, but no immediate announcement on a fix is available.] When sending a message, extra line breaks are added between paragraphs.
- [As of 6/19/09, this has been reported to the vendor, but no immediate announcement on a fix is available.] If you click on the link to switch a message from HTML format (default) to Plain Text, you lose all formatting, including the carriage returns. This happens with Compose, Reply (All), or Forward. In the other browsers you will lose the formatting (which is the expected behavior), but the carriage returns stay intact.
- [10.3 and 10.4, except 10.4.11] If you click on "Options" and then click on one of the options (e.g. "Layout"), you will receive a blank screen. Press your browser's "Back" button (you may have to do this more than once) and then click on the option you want again. This time it should display.
- [10.3 and 10.4, except 10.4.11] The "Font" and "Size" attributes do not work when composing or replying to a message.
- [10.3] Creating new folders in UH WebMail does not work.
- [10.2] The formatting toolbar does not display when composing or replying to messages.
