First Day of School - Raising Awareness at UH-Manoa
Local college radio KTUH, SIQ Records, & Housing Project 360 will host “Spread the Aloha,” a canned food & clothing drive to benefit the homeless teenagers and older seniors served by Waikiki Health Center. The event is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, January 12 at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa Center Courtyard.
Entertainment will be provided by KTUH DJ’s, live local music by SIQ, and a hip hop & house dance exhibit by Housing Project 360.
Canned food, bags of clothing and cash donations will be accepted during the four-hour event, and all contributors will receive a SIQ album by Hawaii hip hop artists Waikiki Health Center: a “medical home” for those in need Waikiki Health Center is in its 42nd year of providing safety net medical and social services to the people of Oahu. No one is turned away for inability to pay.
The non-profit agency’s quality services are available to everyone, but special emphasis is placed on serving those who are the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach, including homeless and runaway teens, older seniors who are “aging in place,” disadvantaged children who need immunizations and physical exams to enroll in school, homeless individuals and families, people with HIV/AIDS, and other at-risk populations. Two-thirds of the Center’s patients live at or below federal poverty level.
